| "The greatest bowl game ever" It is probably the only time Mormons have recited a Hail Mary, and on this night, their prayers were answered. Brigham Young, loser of the first two Holiday Bowls, appeared to be headed to another defeat in the 1980 game. The Cougars trailed Southern Methodist by 20 points with 3:57 remaining. Then, with the help of All-American quarterback Jim McMahon — and some charitable officiating — the Cougars scored a touchdown, then another. Still, the Mustangs were sitting pretty with 13 seconds left, as all they had to do was execute a punt. But BYU's Bill Schoepflin blocked it, giving the Cougars the ball at the SMU 41. With three seconds left, McMahon stepped back and lobbed the ball into the end zone, where tight end Clay Brown made an improbable catch. An extra point later, BYU was a remarkable 46-45 winner.
