History
Garden clubs began in Athens, Georgia, in 1891. The movement spread and reached Arkansas in 1923. The Little Rock Garden Club was organized that year by Mrs. H. N. Heiskell. By 1931, other clubs had formed and Mrs. Allen Gates, President of the Little Rock Garden Club, believed that the time was right for Arkansas clubs to form a state federation.
Nine clubs organized the federation as charter members on June 30, 1931, when forty interested women met at the Albert Pike Hotel. Charter membership was left open until October, and fifteen additional clubs joined Arkansas Federation of Garden Clubs during that period of time.
The Arkansas federation now has five districts: Northeast, Northwest, Pulaski, Southeast, and Southwest. Each district is represented by a District Director.
