07.MAR.'99 | AFTER
CRYING concert in the 3rd BAJA PROG festival (Mexico)
An American journalist's impressions on the After Crying show: I don't think anyone in the crowd was prepared for what was about to happen when After Crying took the stage. I was stunned speechless by their performance, shaking my head in disbelief, and so was everybody else in the place. The long track they opened with was so powerful it brought tears to my eyes. For a few minutes there in Mexicali everything that moves my soul about progressive music was served up by one band. Eight guys from Hungary, six on the stage (guitars+keys, cello+bass, keys+trumpet, keys, drums, and a vocalist) and two more behind the soundboard (flute+soundboard, keys+ soundboard), they did everything - group pieces, solos, duos, trios, vocal pieces, rock, jazz, classical, chamber. It was magical. People were standing after every track, and at the end (only the final band each day was supposed to get an encore) people wouldn't stop applauding, even after the house lights came on, the roar went on for ten minutes or more. Finally they came back and did one more. About half of their set was material on their album "6", the rest - including a Frank Zappa tribute, drawn from their five earlier releases. At one point guitarist Torma Ferenc played the solo "Peace - A Theme", from the second Crimson album; at another point cellist Pejtsik Peter offered an amazing solo piece as well. Keyboardists Winkler Balasz and Lengyel Zoltan teamed up for a jazzy piano duo that brought the house to their feet, but it was the full symphonic group pieces that had the most dynamic impact. Like Le Orme in '97 or Anglagard in '93, this is one of those performances that will no doubt be talked about for years to come. (I am so sorry but I have received the above article through e-mail, and I do not know who its author is.) |
28.FEB.'99 | AFTER
CRYING concert in Bem Rockpart (Budapest)
The boys gave a concert, two and a half hours long. They have played previously recorded tracks only, although these songs has involved many solo pieces. Lengyel Zoltán has played on keyboard (unfortunately I do not know if he is a full member now, or only a guest musician). They plays in Mexico from the 6th of March, so their next performance in Hungary will probably be in late summer, or early autumn. |
27.FEB.'99 | TOWNSCREAM concert
in the Lágymányosi M.H. (Budapest)
Townscream plans
to release two new albums in the near future! Both will be live. Vedres
said that one will contain the rock-like tracks, the other will contain
the more comlex, and more jazzy tracks. At the same time Vedres has informed
the public that the so-called rock era of his group is ended. In the future
they plans to include more individual, and solo pieces as in their live
performances as in their albums. The new member Gyermán Júlia plays violin,
and Winkler Balázs of After Crying has joined the group for this concert,
he has played on trumpet.
