Aubuchon Dead at 57
John Aubuchon, the National Press Club's 95th and immediate past
President, current ex-officio member of the Board of Governors and
Chairman of the Freedom of the Press Committee, died Wed., July 23,
after a short but vigorous battle with cancer, complicated by
pneumonia. He was 57.
He was an award-winning television broadcaster, who this year received
the Ted Yates Award from the Washington D.C. Chapter of the National
Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. This award is reserved for the
individual who has demonstrated outstanding professional and personal
qualities in their contribution to Capital Region television news and
public affairs.
Aubuchon had been with Maryland Public Television since 1996 as a
senior correspondent and lead reporter on MPT's legislative coverage.
Before joining MPT he was a White House correspondent, covering the
Reagan, Bush I and Clinton Administrations for Tribune Broadcasting. He
also covered Capitol Hill. Prior to that he had worked for UPI Radio,
Metromedia Radio News, WTOP Radio and Channels 7 and 9 in Washington.
He had been a Vietnam correspondent for Armed Forces Radio and
Television [
AFVN - the American Forces Vietnam Network]. John Aubuchon
was only the third broadcast newsman to lead the NPC. He was passionate
about press freedom issues and enhancement of the Club in terms of
professional affairs, education and opportunities for members. He and
his wife were annual competitors and frequent winners in the Club's
annual chili cooking contest.
John Aubuchon is survived by his wife, Kemi, a daughter, a son, three
grandsons, his father, a brother and a sister.
