Prisoner Support Networks
The links below are to give an introduction into the realities of, first the so-called "justice" system in the country, and then as it applies to American Indian inmates.

Some of the links provide information regarding legislation to correct problems in the system as a whole - others are strictly devoted to the needs of individual inmates and their abuse, neglect, or wrongful convictions/incarcerations. There are also lists of inmates that wish to hear from people on the outside.

Correspondence with our brothers and sisters on the inside can be a very beneficial experience for all - IF we all follow some pretty important guidelines. Those would be: 1. Proceed with Caution - not all Indians are innocent nor harmless by virtue of their blood. 2. We strongly recommend that women on the outside don't correspond with men and men on the outside with women - for many reasons - we can't take choices but there is potential for abuse on both sides of the walls - SO SEE ITEM 1. 3. Try NOT TO USE HOME ADDRESSES - get a PO Box - for obvious reasons. DON'T GIVE HOME NUMBERS. 4. Don't promise things you are pretty sure you aren't going to or are not able to follow through with. 5. Learn all the rules for correspondence from the facility before sending anything - to include letters.

You can also help by informing people about the situations facing not only American Indian prisoners - but their brothers and sisters on the outside - the problems start outside the prisons - with family, child, spouse, alcohol, drug abuse - nutured by gov't and corporate greed.
