The Pig and Whistle (Chung Hua Road, Sec. 2, #102. Phone - (03) 531-5099) is a very popular spot with Hsinchu's foreign community. Done up as a British pub, the place offers plenty of liquor, as well as steak, spaghetti, salad, Mexican food, and lots more. There is also a pub upstairs where you can hear live music.
Another place for foreigners is The Pig Pen (Chung Cheng Road, #175-06. Phone - (03) 52961-9999). They have a lot in common with the Pig and Whistle, including the British pub motif, beer galore, and Western food, not to mention live music.
One other spot for foreigners is The Flying Pig (enough with the pigs already!) (Wen Hua Street, #1-1. Phone - (03) 525-5481). They serve plenty of beer and snacks.
For a change of pace, Indonesian cuisine is available cheaply at Rumah Makan Wellya (Hsin Yi Street, #41. Phone - (03) 528-5507).
A great place to stock up on Western style cakes and cookies is Isabelle (Chung Cheng Road, #95. Phone - (03) 321-0088).
Danby (Dong Men Road, #80. Phone - (03) 528-4081) also has cakes and cookies, as well as delicious bread.
Kuo Yuan Ye (Chung Cheng Road, #115-1. Phone - (03) 524-1715) is famous for their delicious pineapple cakes. They also have other sweets for sale.
If you are a booklover, you will enjoy Eslite Books (Da Tong Road, #16. Phone - (03) 527-8907), where you can find books on science, travel, psychology, history, and more in English and Chinese.
One internet cafe very close to the train station is 21st Century Internet PC Game Coffee Shop (Chung Hua Road, Sec. 2, #297. Phone - (03) 533-2700).
