The Medicine Wheel is a symbol of the Universe, presenting thoughts and principles in a tangible way for the Children of Earth to learn from. It is comprised of three basic elements:
The Four Directions
The Center
The Sacred Hoop
is the circle of all that lives, the journey we take along the Good Red Road, our connection to each and every Relation upon the earth. This hoop moves ahead in time, yet it is eternal, and a step back is as easy as a step forward. In fact, every point on the Hoop is connected to every other point on the hoop for it is a continuing cycle.
The Four Directions
provide lessons so that Balance may be achieved. They allow a greater understanding of Self, and remind us to look at all aspects of a situation. These different views are needed in order to fully comprehend any experience.
EAST is the color of yellow and its Totem is Eagle. East is the direction of clarity, enlightenment, and illumination. It is also the direction of birth and new beginnings.
SOUTH is the color of red and its Totem is Coyote. It is the direction of summer and adolescence. It is also the direction of trust, innocence, humility, and the inner child.
WEST is the color of black and its Totem is Bear. It is the direction of autumn and adult life. It is the direction of introspection and meditation; looking within ourselves to hear our own Truth and how it applies to the rest of the world.
NORTH is the color of white and its Totem is the White Buffalo. It is the direction of winter and the Elder years. This is the direction of purification, renewal, and gratitude. It is also the direction of wisdom that has been gained throughout life.
The Center
is the place where these four directions combine as one; the very heart and soul. This is the direction where one recognizes his/her role in life, becomes his/her Self, and then freely gives of this Self so that others may know joy and beauty.
