Reading Through The Bible You could open up the Bible and start reading but do you know where your should start? Scott Hahn and Jeff Cavins will deal with this throughout the series in talking about how to read the Bible in chronological order while talking about what the Bible is saying. It is important to know its a book of history. You can't just open it up and start reading. It doesn't read like a novel. They will be giving out the keys to reading the Bible in Chronological order and to make sense. Scott talks about four key theological concepts and foundation principals. They look at what can we do with it and how we can apply it. They also talk about covenants and look at the six covenants that were made throughout the Bible. History Of Early World The first 11 chapters contain the main themes of the Bible. You can compared to an acorn that starts to grow and sprouts out into a tree. They take a look at the first parts of Genesis 1-11. They say that genealogy acts like a lens on a camera. They also talk about the covenant that was made with Noah and how his sons spread throughout the land. Scott talks more in detail about the four themes and they mean. He also talks about what the differences are between contract and covenant. Patriarchs Scott and Jeff take a look at God's blood covenant with Abraham which takes in the second part of Genesis (12-50). They talk about how these three promises that God made with Abraham were upgraded into covenants. They talk also about the patriarchs and what they were and why blessings were important. They show how it doesn't matter what men do to us as long as we follow the Lord and they show how this is true with Joseph who was sold into slavery and ended up ruling Egypt. Israel In Egypt Scott and Jeff look at Abraham and the three promises and covenants that were made between him and God. They talk about the book of Exodus and explain difficult areas of the book. They talk about Israel as being God's first born son and the covenant that was made at Mount Sini. They look at what and why cattle sheep and goats were sacred for Egyptians. He also explains the breakaway from Egypt and the Mt. Sini covenant. They then talk about the "golden calf" incident and the result from it and why the Levites were the ones who became priests. Conquest Of Canaan Scott and Jeff take a look at the forty year wandering of Israel in the desert. They look at the books Deutoronomy and Numbers. The book of Numbers mostly covers the forty year wandering in the desert by the Israelis. They also look at the Duetoromic covenant that was made. The Duetoromic covenant was the political constitution for the nation of Israel from their time until the coming of Christ. It was to Israel as what the Constitution of the United States is to us. They also take a look at why did God require animal sacrifice. Judges Scott and Jeff take a look at the rise and fall of the Israeli nation. They talk about the books of Joshua and Judges. They also talk about a five point cycle of sin that takes place seven times during this period. The cycle starts out by finding ourselves in sin until we are delivered by God and then we go back to silence. Every time during this cycle, God raised up leaders who were called Judges. There were 12 judges, 6 who were major judges and 6 who were minor ones. Scott talks about the three parts of Joshua and the battle of Jehrico. United Kingdom Scott and Jeff take a look at the kings Saul, David, and Solomon who were the three major kings of Israel. This occurs during the books of 1/2 Samuel and 1 Kings. The absence of a king represented a lack of holy leadership. Samuel warned the people of what a king would do and King Solomon ended up doing what Samuel said a king would do. They also look at how the second promise God made to Abraham was fulfilled in David. The kingdom lasted 120 years and was divided into 40 years for the three kings. It is during this time that is considered to be Israel's Golden Age. Divided Kingdom Jeff and Scott take a look at the rebellion against King Solomon's son came about and how it resulted in the division of Israel into two. This occurs during the books of 1 and 2 Kings. They point out that it is important to pay attention to who the prophets are which part of Israel they are talking to. By doing this it is easier to understand what they are saying and why they are. This period occurs around 930 BC. They also look at the story of Jonah and the prophets Daniel and Ezekiel. The Exile Scott and Jeff talk about the exile in Babylon and the return from exile to Israel. It is during the period of the return of the Jews that Judaism begins. Israel spent 70 years in exile and the return to Israel took place in 3 sections. They take a look at the books of Ezra and Nehemiah who were some of the first to return from exile. It is also during this time that the prophets Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi wrote. They close out the Old Testament by taking a look at the Maccabbean revolt and the book of Maccabbeas. Gospels I Scott and Jeff start out by talking about how to navigation around the new testament. They talk about how the New Testament is made up and who the authors of the Gospels are addressing it to and what the theme of their Gospel is and how they portrayed Christ. They also talk about the similarities of Jesus and Moses. Gospels Ii Scott and Jeff take a look at St. John's Gospel which is considered to be the most symbolic. It gives us a reliable history that is almost sacramental. They talk about the sacraments that are found in John's Gospel which is Baptism and the Eucharist. They also talk why the Eucharist is really the Flesh of Christ and not a symbol and why for many years no one questioned it. It is in John 6:4 that Jesus links himself to the Passover and exodus. The Old Testament lamb is a symbol of Christ. Acts I Jeff and Scott give an introduction to the early church. The book of Acts is the last historical books. It contains the third promise to Abraham as Jesus gave the command to go out preaching. They take a look at how the book of Acts is divided into three parts which covers 29 years of expansion of the church. They also talk about a theological approach to Acts They also talk about Sola Fida and Sola Scriptura, what it is, and is it justified. Acts II Scott and Jeff conclude the series by taking a look at the books of Hebrews and Revelations. Hebrews gives us an insight to how the New Covenant fulfills the old covenant. Jesus is looked at as being the New Melzechedek. It is the doctrine of the Eucharist that is the basis for the new covenant. They also talk about how to get at the heart of the message of Revelation. It is in the Mass that we will win the spiritual battle. They also talk about what does revelation has to say about the anti-Christ and the rapture and how is Mary the Ark of the New Covenant. HOME |
