5th Div History

The 3 Years and 8 Months that Singapore experienced during the Japanese Occupation was a harsh and cruel one. We must not forget what our forefathers and grandfathers endured and sacrificed to help us regain the peace, security and prosperity that we have now. We aim to show as many interesting pictures of Singapore during WW2 as we can for all to understand how was the situation like 60 years ago.

A local Malay Regiment mortar team.  Note British equipment worn.

The British surrender in 1942. They are on their way to the Ford Factory which was the place of the official surrender.  This factory is currently undergoing extensive restoration.

Japanese troops marching along Serangoon Road after the British Surrender.  Singapore was lost in merely 2 weeks of fighting.  Majority of them are wearing shorts.
