Introduction to Japanese WW2 Field Gear and Equipment
A lot of wartime photos showed Japanese troops dressed in lightweight uniforms designed for wear in countries with hotter climate.  In Singapore, this was none farther than the truth.
Here is a detailed walkthrough of what the ordinary Japanese Infantry soldier would have worn when he set foot on Singapore soil for the next 3 years and 8 months.  You will never find this information just by watching dramas like the Price of Peace, A War Diary…… =-p

Rubberised Gas Mask - Shown is an original army rubberized gas mask which protected the wearer against chemical attacks. This had either a hose type of filter or a screw-on filter unit. It was normally carried in a brownish canvas bag. It was worn on the left side of the soldier.  Civilian gas masks were different in shape and sizes and there were even masks for horses in the Calvary!
Type 30 Bayonet - Perhaps the most feared weapon by all would be the 20 inch long Japanese Type 30 Bayonet, which was manufactured from 1897 till the end of the war.  This example featured a hooked qullion.  Other versions included a straight qullion and a straight qullion with squared pommel. This version was a common one made in the Tokyo Arsenal prior to 1936 indicated by the manufacturer stamping on the blade. (Denoted by three circles overlapping)  There were around 13 different manufacturers and some bayonets had a certain degree of rarity when it comes to hard to find manufacturer markings.  The scabbard shown is made of steel.  Other harder to find scabbards were made of rubberized material and even wood.
