Apollo is a unique charter school program open to gifted students
ages 6-18 (traditionally defined as grades 1-12)  whose academic and/or intellectual abilities require differentiated educational programs. No less than learning disabled students, highly gifted students require specially trained instructors and a course of instruction appropriate to their actual capabilities.

Apollo is open to students who score in the top 2% in one of several accepted tests. The Apollo Charter School is dedicated to meeting the needs of these students throughout Denver, and will accept applications from students throughout Colorado.

Apollo's charter will enable the school to open its doors in September of 2001. Our charter is approved for grades 1-8; pending approval of our high school curriculum,  Apollo will also serve students in traditional grade 9 at that time. (As noted in the curriculum, Apollo does not use age-based grades but groups children by subject mastery and ability.)

LOCATION

At this point there are two likely sites for Apollo: at 825 Ivanhoe, Denver, CO 80220; and 2600 Leyden St, Denver, CO 80207. Both of these are churches with extra rooms they are willing to rent to us.

WANTED: INVOLVED PARENTS & TEACHERS

Apollo will need the active participation of as many parents as possible. If you pre enroll your child now, you will have a chance to serve on one of several committees which will help our school get off to a great start. We also currently (3/3/2001) have a vacancy for a parent representative on our board of directors.

OK, BUT WHAT GRADES ARE THE KIDS IN?

Again: Apollo intends to individualize instruction and group kids by subject mastery, ability, and interest, not grade level per se. But Denver Public Schools, as well as many interested parents, will certainly want to know the age/grade level of these children. There are valid reasons for this. Most obviously, the age of the students is one of the most tangible indications parents can get, before the school opens, of what kind of school their children will have.

So here are the figures as of 7/7/2000 for preenrollment in Apollo. All of this preenrollment information was taken from applications submitted after April 1, 2000. Certainly these figures will change, and more will enroll, by June 2001. This is where the students will be by 'grade', ranked solely according to the rather spurious 9/30 cutoffs used by metro area schools... as of September 2001 Remember, Apollo will have a class size of 20 students which transcends any single grade level.
