The Gunstar is the brainchild of the infamous Commanders Cain and Adama. The original design was created well before the holocaust when the production of warships was at a virtual standstill and various military leaders feared for the survival of the Colonies. Commander Cain met with those various leaders and with the backing of Adama designed the new support ship to the battlestars : the Gunstar. Though not as large and bulky as her counterparts, the gunstar can outmanuever the fastest of Cylon ships.
After the Holocaust, President Tina Atrakis decided to build the Gunstars as an extra precautionary measure and to help support Colonial defenses. The first Gunstar, the Caprica, was built in the Caprican Shipyards and commissioned within a yahren thanks to advanced construction techniques developed by the Delphian Empire. Eventually, the Colonial navy wants two Gunstars per Battlestar in all scenerios.
