Since the 1940's there has always been a Starman, for the most part in the role as the Guardian of Opal City. To date there have been seven different heroes that used the name in their fight for the good. The first ever to make that name his was Ted Knight. With the help of another scientist he developed what he called the Cosmic Rod. The device enabled him to fly and fire energy bursts among other things. Plagued by guilt from the fact that he felt he was partially responsible for the development of the atomic bomb, he briefly retired in 1951. Upon his return he served in the Justice Society and the All Star Squadron. After decades of service he past on the duties of Starman to his oldest son David. Unfortunately David died soon thereafter in the line of these duties.
Jack Knight, Ted's youngest son cared little for his fathers career as Starman and certainly never even wasted a thought on taking up the Starman mantle himself. Things changed with the death of his brother. He became the 7th Starman through a strong desire to keep Opal City safe. He changed the role of Starman to fit his personality though. To this day Jack refuses to wear the red and green Starman uniform, nor does he want to join any team. He also exchanged the familiar Cosmic Rod for a staff.
Powered by energy drawn from the stars, this new Cosmic Rod is also capable of many feats - flight, energy blasts, intense heat/light, and a limited force field to repel bullets. The staff can be controlled by pure thought.
Though Jack would rather be dealing in collectibles, he is quick to answer the call for Starman when so needed. To his surprise he finds that the more he does so, the more he enjoys it.
