Mrs. Jan Jackson
32 McKee Circle, North Little Rock, AR 72116
Jan Jackson
With her children by her side, Janice Carol Jackson walked into her Lord’s loving arms on the morning of March 8, 2009. Jan enjoyed being around people and she had a heart warming smile for everyone she met. In her last years, she refused to let her increasing chronic ailments hinder the pursuit of her goals. She will forever be remembered as a person who savored every last drop of life she could get.
Jan was born to the late Marcus and Gertrude Blackwood on December 7, 1939, in St. Louis, Missouri. She spent most of her childhood years in Paragould, Arkansas, and later moved to North Little Rock where she was a 1957 graduate of North Little Rock High School.
Deciding to follow her true calling to become a teacher, she enrolled at Arkansas State Teacher’s College and graduated in 1961. Her first job as a school teacher was with the North Little Rock School District at North Heights Elementary School.
After a brief period managing the family owned Blackwood’s Beauty Salon, in the Belwood subdivision of North Little Rock, she eagerly went back to the world of teaching. Her next assignment as a teacher was with Bayou Meto Elementary School in the Pulaski County Special School District where she taught until she retired.
Throughout her life she had been a member of the Order of The Eastern Star. Jan was originally installed into the organization on May 19, 1967 as a member of the Florence Chapter. This organization provided to her the friendship, support, and love that she cherished and held close to her heart for all of her days. The culmination of her membership took place on December 8, 2006, when she was installed as the Worthy Grand Matron of the Grand Chapter of Arkansas. She took her appointment seriously and with a fiery ambition she saw to it that the organization ran successfully.
Jan is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Kevin Nichols of North Little Rock; a son and daughter-in-law, Kip and Robin Jackson of Sherwood; one twin brother and sister-in-law, James and Dee Blackwood of Sunnyvale, Texas; two grandsons, Jackson and Jared Nichols of North Little Rock; two nephews, Mark Blackwood and his wife Janie of Spring, Texas; and Jay Blackwood and his wife Sonya of Cypress, Texas; her traveling companion and best friend, Georgia Graham of North Little Rock; and her good friend and doctor, Dr. Joe Buford of North Little Rock; and many other friends.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Dr. Buford’s office and nursing staff for their sincere love and care throughout these past years.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Levy Baptist Church, (501)753-7347. Internment will be at Rest Hills Memorial Park in North Little Rock. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Roller – Owens Funeral Home, 5509 John F Kennedy Blvd, in North Little Rock, (501-791-7400).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in honor of Jan, be made to the Children’s Wing Renovation Fund at Levy Baptist Church, 3501 Pike Avenue, North Little Rock, AR 72118.
