THE ARK SYMBOLIZES OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST

THE ARK POINTS TO THE COMMANDMENTS OF JESUS CHRIST

The Bible describes Noah's character in no uncertain terms. "But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD (YAHWEH). This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God." (Gen. 6:8-9) With such sterling qualities no wonder God chose Noah to build the Ark that would not only save his family but also preserve mankind and other creatures for posterity. What made the Ark unique and unsinkable is because its designer is God Almighty Himself. Noah was the ship-builder who had constructed the Ark according to God's plan, instructions and specifications.

Here is what God commanded Noah: "Make yourself an Ark of gopherwood; make rooms in the Ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch. And this is how you shall make it: The length of the Ark shall be 300 cubits, its width 50 cubits, and its height 30 cubits. You shall make a window for the Ark, and you shall finish it to a cubit from above; and set the door of the Ark in its side. You shall make it with lower, second, and third decks." (Gen. 6:14-16) "Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did." (Gen. 6:22) Again, it is written, "And Noah did according to all that the LORD (YAHWEH) commanded him." (Gen. 7:5)

Noah's Ark represents a complete work that was the result of total obedience to God's Commandments. In the other sections of this study we have established how each element of the Ark prefigures certain aspects of the salvation process of the Lord Jesus Christ. From the New Testament point of view Noah's Ark points to the Commandments of the Lord Jesus Christ.

There are seven important commandments given by our Lord Jesus Christ:

  1. The Lord Jesus Christ repeated "The Shema" which contains the most fundamental truth of Monotheism: "The first of all the commandments is: 'Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one. and you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' This is the first commandment." (Mk:12:29-30)

  2. Our Lord said that the Second Commandment is like the first one. Both commandments are based on love. "You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these." (Mk. 12:31)

  3. The Great Commission is given by our Lord Jesus Christ to His disciples before His ascension to heaven. "Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned." (Mk. 16:15-16)

  4. Before ascending to heaven the Lord Jesus Christ assembled together with His disciples. "He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, 'which,' He said, 'you have heard from Me; 'for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." (Acts 1:4-5) "Now when the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. . . And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." (Acts 2:1-4)

  5. Before the Feast of the Passover, after supper, the Lord Jesus Christ washed His disciples feet. Our Lord said to Peter, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me." (Jn. 13:8) He then said to His disciples:"If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you." (Jn. 13:14-15)

  6. The night before His sacrifice on Calvary's Cross the Lord Jesus Christ instituted Holy Communion. "And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, 'This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.' Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, 'This cup is the New Covenant in My blood, which is shed for you." (Lk. 22:19-20)

  7. When questioned on the legality of plucking heads of grain on the Sabbath the Lord Jesus Christ declared:"The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath." (Mk. 2:27-28) The Pharisees asked Jesus: "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath? - that they might accuse Him. Then He said to them, 'What man is there among you who has one sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not lay hold of it and lift it out? Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath." (Mt. 12:9-12)
