AN AZOREAN IN MID AMERICA, although already fairly well established as my main page, takes into consideration a career took me all over the world. Nevertheless it fails to consider the "pioneering" actions of my several visits to Asia and Australasia. It is my hope, therefore, that those who read the pages that follow will realize that Asia and Australasia were in reality one of my most enjoyable tasks, not only from the professional, but also from the social viewpoint.

FRIENDS DISCOVERED OVER TIME
Choosing friends may not be that difficult. There are always certain people who are bound by the same task is one is.
John Rowe's humor did not match his "patriotism". John was a firm believer in the Western way of life and its values. Educated at a private school, where sport was a must for every student, John never lost his zest for athletic activity. In spite of a busy schedule, John would get up in the very early hours of the morning in order not to miss his daily ocean swim. Being a History buff, and a pacifist, the visit still remains in my memory as a symbol of how cruel man can be.

As we got to know each other better over the years, he would tell me that somehow he wanted a bit more out of life than Rio de Janeiro could offer. In time I talked him into visiting Australia. He did and liked what he saw, although he returned to his native land (Portugal) to marry. His daughter, Suzy, was born in Sydney, where José Maria and Cândida settled. At 13 she was already performing as if she were an adult at Portuguese Club feasts, although it was her ambition to go on to the university and, possibly, study medicine. Someday I shall find out if she ever did...
