MYLAI is a Tamil font created by Dr. K.Kalyanasundaram primarily as a medium for archiving and distributing tamil electronic texts on the Internet. The font is available in identical format - for use on Windows Pcs (Windows 3.x, NT and 95), Macintosh PCs and UNIX platforms. Unlike most of the commercial fonts that use the classical tamil typewriter keymap, Mylai keymapping is phonetically linked to english/roman keyboard.
A Web page describing features of Mylai Tamil font is available. . The Mylai tamil font is distributed Free (direct download). to individuals and non-profit organizations.
In the last two years, several thousand internet users have obtained a free copy of the Mylai Tamil font and have been using it successfully on Macintosh and Windows-based PCs. The mylai tamil font users spread across the entire globe (Continental US, Hawaii, Alaska, most of the European countries, Gulf states, India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Australasia, Japan, .....). The collection of electronic texts in Tamil that I am making available has been a major incentive for a number of internet audience to install Mylai on their PCs.
If you are interested to get additional font faces corresponding to mylai keymap, Dr. K. Srinivasan of ADHAWIN is offering Mylai-Sri free. Please visit his web site to download a copy.
It is now possible to set up bilingual (english/tamil) web pages, subject to certain minimal constraints: use Web browser such as Netscape either on a Macintosh or on Windows based PC and have the tamil font (Mylai) installed on that same PC. Tamil materials can be directly displayed in Tamil along with explanatory notes in English.
A handful of the Internet users have already taken lead to set up Web pages that use Mylai font. Dr. Ram Ravindran of Indiana, USA, for example, has set up a Mylai-based Web page that allow internet audience to learn Tamil. Within a few months of its existence, this site has become very popular. Earlier I posted through Web some Tamil kural/venba compositions of Dr. Ilango of New Zealand on the Mechanics of Materials. Etext files of Tamil fims songs based on Mylai are also available.
Given such an extensive internet users of a single tamil font, it is useful to have a forum that can help exchange of useful files that were created using this Tamil Font. This forum has been set up to promote such exchange of tamil based materials whenever people use the Mylai tamil font to create these materials. In the initial stage, this Web page will provide all available info. on Tamil Materials that have been prepared using the Mylai Tamil font - materials that their authors are willing to share with the internet audience!
If you have prepared any useful tamil material using the Tamil font Mylai and are prepared to share it with the internet audience, please let me know so that I can put up a reference to it. The material can be exchanged via a Web page or via a ftp server or via personal email from the author of the file.

Sanskrit
Scriptural Sthothrams (prayers/hymns) in Tamil Script
As part of the Tamil Electronic Library, Tamil texts of Sanskrit
Scriptures such as Aadithya
Hridayam, Sri Venkatesa Suprabhatam, several
Sukthams, and Ashtothara Satha Naama Sthothrams
were prepared using Mylai font. Dr. Tuppal Ramanuja Chari of St.
John's in Canada has also
prepared Tamil texts of Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam, Sri Lakshmi
Ashtotharam, Maha Lakshmi Ashtakam and other Sthothrams in Mylai
font. We have pooled our compilations and archived the texts in a directory, designated as MYLAI.
Files may be accesssed in *.txt format and roman characters or as fully
formatted MS Word *.doc and WPWin *.wpd
files with Mylai characters. An
index of the directory gives the complete listing
of the Sthothrams, date archived, archiving format, and file format
for each file.
Please forward your suggestions, critique, or comments to
Dr. T. Ramanuja Chari of
Canada and Dr. K. Kalyanasundaram.
