Aran Valley
Aran Valley lies in the Pyrenees,
in Catalonia, within the Spanish state. Aranese (as the
local Occitan variant is called) is officially recognized
with its own orthography. In no other place of the huge
Occitan domain does the language have official recognition:
only in this little valley. Taught regularly in school since
1984. Catalan (see another page) and Spanish are
co-official. Considered to be a dialect of Commingese Gascon
of France, and inherently intelligible with it, but Aranese
is influenced by Catalan and Spanish rather than French.
Some 4,500 speakers out of a population of 6,000 (much
greater in winter, due to winter sport resorts). The capital
is Vielha.

Val d'Aran
Aran Harana Katalunian dago,
Espainiaren mendean, baina izatez Okzitaniako parte da.
Aranes edo Aranera, bertako okzitaniera, gaskoieraren
dialektoa da, baina katalanak eta gaztelaniak ukitutakoa, ez
frantsesak. Beste inon ez bezala, legalki ofiziala da haran
honetan hizkuntza hau, eta eskoletan irakasten da 1984tik.
Ortografia berezkoa ere badauka. Katalana (ikus beste orri batean) eta gaztelania ere
koofizialak dira. Haranak 6.000 laguneko biztanlegoa du
(neguan gehiago, monarkak kontatuz gero), eta horietarik
4.500 dira hiztunak. Hiriburua Vielha da.
