The Last Sermon of the Prophet

Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wabarakatuhu

I'm going to speak about a very famous and significant event of the life of Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H). The event I am going to share with you contains the most comprehensive document which can be called the gist of the teachings of the Holy Qur'an.

I mean the Last Sermon of Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H). It was delivered at Mount Arafat in the Prophet's last pilrimage. He addressed the pilgrims and said:

"O people, lend me an attentive ear, for I know not whether, after this year, I shall ever be amongst you again. Therefore listen to what I am saying to you very carefully and TAKE THESE WORDS TO THOSE WHO COULD NOT BE PRESENT HERE TODAY.

"O people, Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you. Remember that you will indeed meet your LORD, and he will indeed judge your deeds."

Beware of Satan, for the safety of our religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things.

O people, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women, but they also have rights over you. Remember that you have taken them as your wives only under Allah's trust and with his permission. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do treat your women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with anyone of whom you do not approve, as well as never to be unchaste.

O people, listen to me in earnest, worship ALLAH, offer your five daily prayers (salah), fast during the month of Ramadan, give your wealth in Zakat and perform Hajj if you can afford to.

All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab is not superior over a non Arab nor a non Arab is superior over an Arab; also a white is not superior over a black nor a black is superior over a white except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not, therefore, do injustice to yourselves.

Remember, one day you will appear before Allah and answer for your deeds. So beware, do not drift away from the path of righteousness after I am gone.

O people, NO PROPHET OR APOSTLE WILL COME AFTER ME AND NO NEW FAITH WILL BE BORN. Reason well, therefore, O people, and understand words which I convey to you. I leave behind me two things, the Qur'an and my example the sunnah and if you follow these you will never go astray.

All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those to others again; and may the last ones understand my words better than those who listen to me directly. Be my witness O Allah, that I have conveyed your message to your people.

In light of the last sermon let us ask ourselves what is our duty as the followers of the Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.)? We Muslims have to share our responsibilities to perform our duty and to fufill our obligations in spreading the message which has been given to us in this last sermon. Our understanding of Islam as a total way of life depends mainly on the Holy Qur'an and the Hadith. Our inspiration and motivation, our thoughts and understanding, our theoratical and practical life depend solely and wholly on the Qur'an and hadith which is the source of this last sermon.

There are hundreds and millions of people in the world who are searching for peace and tranquility. They will never attain peace till they accept the religion of peace which is Islam therefore, it is the responsibility of the Muslims who have already accepted Islam to bring this religion of peace to all others.

The future of Islam in America is very bright and we are witnessing people accepting Islam everyday.

Western countries are talking loudly about human rights. Islam these rights to people the last 14 centeries ago through this last sermon. Early Muslims even fought the tyrants in the world to liberate the masses from slavery of humanbeings: intelectually, pshycologically, economically, physically, politically, militarily, religiously, and the like. It was through the blessings of Allah that Islam liberated human beings and made them to respect one another.

We Muslims belong to Allah (s.w.t) first, last and forever. We submit ourselves to Allah and therefore we obey Allah and his prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.).

Islam is a total way of life to live in, to experience it, to enjoy it, to be contended and to be happy with.

We worship no one but Allah. Our loyalty is for Allah, our life is for Allah, our death is for Allah, our happiness is for Allah, our sorrows are for Allah.

I hope and pray that all of us will fulfill our duties and our perform our commitment as Muslims in order to be considered among the believers, the Mutaqeen and Sadiqeen. In doing so, we be among the winners in this world and in the hereafter. Insha Allah. Wassalamualahum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.
