Monument
Jasper,
Alabama
Erected by the Jasper Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy
in 1907 to the memory of those soldiers who served the Confederate States
of America from Walker County, Alabama, this monument bears a likeness
of a cavalry soldier on the left hand side and another likeness of an infantry
soldier on the right which depicts the type of companies and regiments
that were recruited in Walker County. Another likeness of a confederate
soldier tops the monument as is of the type seen on many other confederate
monuments in Alabama.
Inscription on the left side of monument
reads:
"THEIR SHIVERED SWORDS ARE RED WITH RUST,
THEIR PLUMED HEADS ARE BOWED,
THEIR HAUGHTY BANNER TRAILED IN DUST,
IS NOW THEIR MARTIAL SHROUD"
Inscription on the
face of the monument reads:
"FURL THAT BANNER!
TRUE TIS' GORY,
YET' TIS WREATHED AROUND WITH GLORY,
AND' TWILL LIVE IN SONG AND STORY,
THOUGH ITS FOLDS ARE IN THE DUST.

Inscription on the right side of the monument
reads:
"IN MEMORY OF
OUR BRAVE SOLDIERS,
WHO WORE THE GRAY,
THEY FOUGHT FOR YOU AND ME"
Inscription on the rear side of the monument
reads:
"HOW SLEEP THE BRAVE WHO SINK TO REST,
BY ALL THEIR COUNTRY'S WISHES BLEST"
