Minamoto Yorimitsu (948-1021) |
Minamoto
Yoriyoshi (988-1082) was a legend on his own right --
they said it took him five minutes to blast through a whole regiment. |
|
Yoriyoshi's son Minamoto Yoshiie (1039-1106) was worthy of daddy's name; to the Japanese of every generation since 1106 he has been known simply as 'Hachiman Taro' -- 'first son of the god of war'. People said Yoshiie fits in every inch to the nickname. And this still be so even though the meaning of the name is actually rather 'civilian': 'the good house'. Minamoto Yoritomo's notorious wife, Lady Hojo Masako (sometimes the spelling reads 'Masago'), being depicted by a 2005 cartoonist in the state of having entered monastery after the husband's death. She and her equally infamous daddy kept on clawing for power. Even after being a nun, in her case, she still installed and overthrew new Emperors as often as you blink. Click here.
