The Atakari are a hawk-headed race of birdmen who inhabit cold or usually temperate mountains. The Atakari stand anywhere between 3'1" to about 3'9 with the average of about 3'5" tall. However, Atakari's bones are hollowed in order to allow them enough lift to get off the ground, making them weight no more than 25 to 40 lbs. An Atakari's wing span stretches out to approximately 15 ft. across. These wings are attached to the Atakari's shoulder blades and are drawn behind them while not flying. These brown feathered birdmen have claw-like talons for hands and feet. The feet are capable of grabbing onto objects and gripping ledges or branches as per a normal set of hands, though they cannot attack or perform complex actions with them. Combat: Atakari realize their disposition in melee combat and find that they are better suited for ranged attacks. While keeping at a safe distance, Atakari will rain arrows or throw their spears upon unsuspecting enemies. Only a few handful of Atakari are known to enter into melee combat, these are usually level 3 or higher fighters that have taken the Flyby Attack feat. With specially made Atakari lance-blades, these birdmen will make charge attacks against their opponents, strike and retreat back into the skies before letting themselves be caught in melee. It is not to uncommon to see Atakari spellcasters use ranged spells from outstanding heights. One thing that most Atakari must be careful of however is that their feathers are highly flammable. Launching a fireball in the middle of a group of Atakari's and then watching them plummet to the earth is a favored tactic used by most Atakari enemies. Atakari gain a +1 racial bonus on all attack rolls versus Dragons and Giants due to their constant waring and a +4 dodge bonus. Ecology: The Atakari tend to be a xenophobic race, keeping themselves isolated atop their mountain peaks while being on a watchful guard against most of their adversaries. However, once and awhile there are a few curious sorts who turn to a life of adventuring which is how the Atakari were first discovered. Reguardless of other humanoid races' attempts to open political channels or even open trade the birdmen have remained resiliant to their isolationist ways. Only one race has ever been allowed to enter an Atakari city and even then under the strictest scrutiny, that being the race of Elves. |
Society: The Atakari's believe that those who live on the ground are of a seperate world that does not affect the Atakari's way of life nor should it. Outsiders are viewed with suspicion and wonder. Though heavily curious in the ways of the groundlings, the Atakari believe that any agreements made with the groundlings will bring betrayal and devestation. Since the Atakari are so few in relative settlements, the birdmen have plenty of reasons to be overprotective of their homes. Like other races, the Atakari have fought endlessly for territorial rights with other creatures that inhabit mountain regions such as Dragons, Giants and Trolls. So most outsiders are often believed to be wanting to invade their homes and are automatically dealt with very aggressively or even hostilly. Though xenophobic the Atakari's practice a strict code of honor. Those who have had the fortune of saving an Atakari's life are granted favors or even life debts. Unfourtunatly there are very few individuals who can claim to have gained the respect of an Atakari. The birdmen are also honorable in combat. They refuse to attack adversaries that are unarmed, or if intent on killing a particular enemy, they will be arm before combat begins. Unless the opponent is threatening the saftey of an Atakari's city or other interest, if an opponent defeat's an Atakari in honorable combat then that creature will be left alone by future Atakaris. Noble to their name, an Atakari's word is their bond, and it cannot be broken without suffering societal shame. Atakari's lay eggs and must incubate them for a good five months before they hatch. Most female Atakari lay anywhere between 4 to 11 eggs (1d8+3) and only capable of laying eggs during the fall and hatch in the spring. Atakari children are considered to be mature at the age of 13 (or whenever they're capable to weild a bow) and usually live to 240 years before dieing of old age. |
