Earth Force had been established at the same time as the Earth Alliance, joining together the disparate nations of Earth into one unified military force. Later, when the Alliance began constructing military spacecraft, Earth Force grew to take jurisdiction over the space based military as well. As the Alliance grew, so did Earth Force's power until, in 2113, it spanned across six star systems and commanded over two hundred capital ships of all types and sizes. During the time before the Earth-Minbari War, Earth Force spent most of its resources improving the existing fleets and training new ground forces for garrison duty on the outlying colonies. In 2231 the Earth Alliance declared war on the Dilgar Empire and sucessfully joined the Narn Regime and League of Non-Alligned Worlds, winning every engagement against the Dilgar with the more advanced Hyperion Heavy Cruisers and Nova Dreadnaughts. Safe in the knowledge that Earth Force possessed the most advanced warships in the known universe, the High Command became lax, an error which was to lead to disaster in 2245.
The Earth-Minbari War shook Earth Force to its very foundations. Suddenly the massive formations of capital ships and fighters were totally ineffective at dealing with the Minbari Warcruisers and War Frigates, doing little to prevent the Minbari war fleets from sweeping past to lay waste to the colonies and outposts. During the Earth-Minbari War, Earth Force gained very few victories against the Minbari and by 2248 had resigned itself to a slow death with little that could be done. A last gasp by Earth Force in the Sol Asteroid Belt ended with the destruction of the Warcruiser Blackstar at the cost of several Earth Force capital ships, a small victory that bought the Alliance enough time to organize for the Battle of the Line.
By the time the Battle of the Line had begun, Earth Force had lost roughly fifty-five percent of its forces. When the battle had ended, losses were up to eighty percent and though the Minbari had withdrawn, Earth Force had been decimated and was in no position to make any sort of stance, offensive or defensive. Known as the Rebuilding, the period between 2248 and 2259 became a time for expansion and growth within Earth Force.
In 2249, the Omega-class Destroyer was introduced, giving the Earth Alliance its first major modern warship which could fight head-to-head against the major craft of other interstellar governments. By 2250 the First Fleet had been entirely reconstituted with new Destroyers and Cruisers. By 2257 Earth Force had returned to its pre-war status of two hundred warships.
In 2260 the Civil War once again placed major strain on Earth Force. With over one-fourth of the fleet defecting and joining General Hague, including quite a few of Earth Force's Destroyers, Earth Force was once again on the defensive. By 2261 when the Battle of Earth had been joined, Earth Force numbered no more than twenty-five warships. With the surrender and the peace agreement, Earth Force was finally disbanded and replaced with the Earth Alliance Army and Navy.
A separate organization from the Earth Alliance Army, the Navy has total command over all space going vessels within Alliance space, enough authority to commandeer said vessels if the need arises. Charged with the total defense of Alliance space, the Navy is once again on the front line against any threat to the Earth Alliance, internal or external.
