Originally, twelve massive Explorer Vessels were built by the shipyards at Earth. However, since then five have been lost to unforseen dangers such as natural forces or alien defense mechanisms. Another two were destroyed during the Earth-Minbari War when Minbari warships found and destroyed them. The last five ships were recalled for refitting during President Santiago's time in office and remained in dry dock during President Clark's reign. With the emergence of the new government on Earth, the Explorer Vessels have been dispatched to the edges of Alliance space to patrol against threats to the colony worlds.
