Born on Earth at the beginning of the 23rd Century, William Hague was the son of Thomas Hague and Andrea Yarmouth-Hague. Raised in what used to be the United States of America, Hague was a son of privledge, his father being a part of the local government. When he turned 19 in 2220, Hague immediately signed up for service in Earth Force with the intention of gaining command of his own ship. Graduating in 2224, Hague was placed onboard the supply vessel Alexandria and began a tour of duty which would take him throughout Alliance space. His time abroad served well to introduce him to the dangers of interstellar space as more than once the Alexandria was forced to fight off Raiders while visiting more dangerous places such as the Belt Alliance moons in the Orion System. In 2229, after five years of service, Hague received a promotion to Lieutenant Commander and was assigned to his first combat command, the Hyperion Heavy Cruiser Lennox. One of his first missions shortly there-after was a sweep of the Orion System for pockets of Raider activity, a mission which would later render the Belt Alliance obsolete and lead to greater unity in the Orion System. When the Earth Alliance joined in the war against the Dilgar Empire in 2231, the Lennox was assigned to one of the follow-up groups which was to engage the secondary Dilgar fleets and prevent the conquest of more colony worlds. However, the fleet that Hague was a part of ran directly into the main Dilgar invasion force headed for the Zhabar System and began a three day long running battle which was to end with the loss of twelve Earth Alliance warships and the destruction of the Dilgar troop carriers. The invasion foiled, the Dilgar fleet began to fall back but ran right into a reinforcement group of Earth Alliance vessels which finished them off. The Lennox later joined the final assault on the Dilgar Homeworld and stood by as the Narn Imperial Fleet bombarded the world until it was uninhabitable. During the battle, the Lennox recovered a damaged Narn Starfighter carrying the future Warmaster Del'Kyr. It was at this time that Del'Kyr and Hague met and became what the Narn call "Battle Brothers", a relationship which would later save Hague from certain death. Hague's career continued relatively peacefully until 2245 with the outbreak of the Earth-Minbari War. After the disasterous Battle of ShLekkTha and the loss of forty Earth Alliance warships in less than twelve minutes, the High Command began handing out vessels as quickly as possible to capable commanders with promotions to follow. Having been promoted to Captain, Hague received command of the Dreadnought Copernicus and was sent to guard the colony of Vesidia against the Minbari Fleet. When the Battle of Vesidia commenced, the Copernicus was one of the first vessels to be disabled by the guns of the Minbari. However, the Dreadnought's cannons still were able to fire and, with the help of severeal other vessels, was able to destroy several Tinashi Frigates and a Sharlin Warcruiser. The Copernicus then was towed to safety by the Heavy Cruiser Charon while the rest of the ships fought a losing rear guard action against the Minbari Fleet and its reinforcements. Within an hour Vesidia's orbit had been cleared of Earth Alliance vessels and the planet was in the hands of the Minbari. Fleeing the Minbari fleets, the Copernicus and her escort dropped out of hyperspace at the edge of the Vesidia System, hoping that their pursuit would overshoot and miss them. Thus it was with much surprise that the battlegroup left hyperspace to discover a small Narn fleet headed into the system. The Earth Alliance ships immediately went to battle stations but the near-certain fight was averted as it was discovered that Del'Kyr was among the crew of the lead vessel. A dialogue was opened and the Narn agreed to resupply the Earth Alliance ships in payment of Del'Kyr's honor debt to Hague. Once again partng ways, Del'Kyr and Hague were not to meet again until 2261. Hague and his crew were once again in action in 2246 against the Minbari, this time in the Wolf 359 System where the key Earth Force shipyards were located. The Minbari Fleet jumped out close to the station and their lasers quickly ripped open the metal hull. The Copernicus and other warships in the area fought bravely but were unable to stop the Minbari advance and were forced to flee when three Warcruisers opened fire on the planet and eradicated the colony. For the next two years the Minbari searched for the human Homeworld System, destroying convoys and doing whatever damage they could. Finally, in 2248, the Minbari Fleet learned Earth's location from the Centauri and sent in a major assault fleet. The bases on the outer worlds were quickly overrun and the Minbari advance continued unchecked until they reached the Asteroid Belt and a general conuter attack began. Acting like wolf packs, Earth Alliance warships pounced on Minbari vessels in an attempt to destroy them. However, the effort was largely a failure as only fourteen enemy craft were destroyed with over fifty Alliance ships lost. However, one of the Minbari ships lost was their flagship, the Blackstar, which was destroyed by hidden mines planted by Lieutenant John Sheridan of the Heavy Cruiser Lexington. With their command ship lost, the Minbari halted long enough for Earth Force to organize Earth's defenses for a last battle. The Copernicus joined the Battle of the Line late, just as it was coming to a close. The Dreadnought jumped into the rear of the Minbari formation and opened fire but was unable to score significant damage. However, before the Warcruisers could turn about to engage Hague's vessel, the Grey Council ordered the surrender of the Minbari Fleet and an end to all hostilities. The Copernicus was to be the vessel that carried the Earth Alliance diplomats to the Grey Council's Warcruiser in order to finalize the treaty and ensure peace between the two powers. In 2249 Hague was promoted to Lieutenant General and given a patrol assignment near the Arisia System, safeguarding the newly rebuilt colony there. In his time guarding the system, Hague saw combat with a variety of Raider groups who were hoping to destabilize the system enough to precipitate an internal rebellion. Because of his efforts and skillful corrdination of the forces in Arisia, he was promoted to General in 2252 and appointed to the Joint Chiefs of Staff for Earth Force. He was to serve in that post for the next five years with total and utter loyalty to the Earth Alliance and the Office of the President. In 2259, President Morgan Clark took office and began to consolidate his power base, quietly removing officers who opposed him and promoting his supporters in their places. By the end of the first month, the Joint Chiefs of Staff saw what was happening and began to move quietly, seeking out key officers to join in a resistance movement against Clark. Key vessels were redeployed to the edges of Earth Alliance space in an effort to keep them from Clark's influence, and Hague made a circut of the colonies under the pretense of an inspection tour, though in reality he was making contacts and setting up a web within which a true resistance might live. One of his final stops before his return to Earth was Babylon 5 where he met with Captain Sheridan and his command staff to discuss his plans. As it would happen, this was to be the last time an Earth Alliance officer was to visit the station before the fall of President Clark's government. With his people finally in place, Clark made his move and within two days had killed off most of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in a series of accidents and assassinations. The only member left alive, Hague fled Earth aboard the Destroyer Alexander, fighting off several Earth Alliance warships as they tried to cut him off at Io. From there, the Alexander headed for deep space and a rendezvous with several other rebel warships. At the rendezvous point, Hague learned of the bombings of civilian targets on Mars, Proxima III and Orion VII and the withdrawl of John Sheridan and Babylon 5 from the Earth Alliance. Intercepted communications indicated that Clark had sent a Destroyer group to recapture Bablyon 5 as well as another group to reinforce the blockade at Proxima. Seeing that his force was too small to do any major damage to either force without time to build, Hague sent the Destroyers Churchill and Acheron to support Babylon 5 while the rest of the rebel force proceeded toward Proxima III and Clark's forces there. The Churchill and Acheron arrived just before Clark's forces, signalling Sheridan to warn him of the approaching threat. With the station's full compliment of Starfuries and the squadrons from the two Destroyers, the rebels formed a wall before the station. Clark's forces, the Destroyers Zeus, Nimrod and Achillies exited the jumpgate a short time later and formed into a spear formation in an effort to break through the rebel wall. However, fire from Babylon 5 and the rebel Destroyers disabled the Achillies and sent it out of control as life pods began erupt from her hull. A wild melee ensued with fighter formations dancing between the larger capital ships as they traded blows. The Acheron was destroyed when a barrage from the Nimrod caused her jump engines to implode and annihilate the aft section of the ship. Shortly after, fighters from the Churchill broke through to destroy the bridge of the Zues and silence her forward guns, leaving only the Nimrod as a threat to the station. It was at this point that the last of Clark's Destroyers began launching breaching pods which screamed in toward Babylon 5 to land troops and hopefully disrupt the station enough to give the ship a fighting chance. However, security troops onboard Babylon 5 were able to contain the fighting and the Churchill was able to cripple the Nimrod, forcing her surrender to the rebels. However, as mop-up operations were beginning, another power surge registered on the sensors as four jump points opened and another full Destroyer group came through to demand the surrender of the Churchill and Babylon 5. Seconds later, another spike preceeded the opening of another four jump points over the station itself. It seemed all had been lost, but then suddenly the tides turned. From the jump points over the station came a Whitestar and three Sharlin Warcruisers, the personal guard of Ambassador Delenn. Seeing that the chance for victory was gone, the Earth Force Destroyers began to fall back while under fire from the Minbari ships, the station and the Churchill. The station secured, prize teams were sent from the Churchill to salvage the other Destroyers and return them to Hague's fleet. Within a few hours, the Churchill and her escorts had made the rendezvous with General Hague near the Proxima System and were ready to jump out. Scouts sent by Hague confirmed that Clark had stationed only six Destroyers in orbit of Proxima III and ground contacts began to relay information about the strengths of each ship. Within an hour, rebel contacts onboard the Destroyers Nemesis and Pollux had secured the allegiances of their captains to Hague as had been able to confirm that the Destroyers Avenger and Death's Head were willing to surrender without a fight. It was only the Heracles and Dominion that posed a threat to the attack force and it was those two ships that bore the brunt of the fire when Hague's fleet jumped from hyperspace to attack. Captain Horatio Donn of the Heracles was killed early in the assault as a Thunderbolt flight broke through to strafe the bridge and disable the forward gunnery stations, cutting the head off of Clark's formation and leaving them disconnected and in disarray. Within half an hour Hague's Destroyers had disabled the Heracles and Dominion and rebel Marines had landed on Proxima III to releive the defenders. Reinforcements to the garrison arrived from the edge of system, the Destroyer Damocles and the Dreadnought Clavigura in the lead. However, the charge was cut short as the Heavy Cruisers Doomfire and Whirlwind were destroyed, allowing fighters to break the defense screens to fire on the larger ships. The counter attacking ships quickly withdrew from the system and fell back toward Earth to link up with loyalist ships. The final act of the battle was played out when three Earth Alliance Destroyers jumped from hyperspace to drive toward Proxima and Hague's vessels. Quickly, the rebel ships turned to face the newcomers but another shooting match was averted as the ships identified themselves as the Agamemmnon, Zealous and Hammer of Foes, three rebel ships that had been trying to link up with Hague since Clark had driven him from Earth. With Proxima secured and several new additions to his fleet, Hague began looking for new targets. Having secured Proxima III as a base of operations, Hague took the majority of his Destroyers and Heavy Cruisers for a drive to the industrial center on Orion VII. As the attack fleet exited hyperspace, the Earth Force defenders began to form up against the fleet. With the Destroyers Inferno and Apollo in the lead, the defenders began to close with Hague's fleet. However, as both sides entered firing range, a jump point opened astern of Hague's formation and the Dreadnought Clavigura with her escorting Heavy Cruisers jumped out to begin attacking the rear of the formation. The Destroyer Churchill was quickly lost and the Cruiser Watch Tower disabled before combined fire from the Agamemmnon and Alexander knocked out the engines on the Clavigura and forced her to withdraw from the battle under the cover of her escorts. It was then that three full squadrons of Starfuries from the Apollo launched a raid against the Alexander, destroying her reactor safety systems and causing a massive overload. However, Hague was able to escape to the Agamemmnon and keep commanding the battle from there. The withdrawl of the Clavigura marked the turning point in the battle, the last real chance that Clark's forces had to win. By the end of the day, Hague's fleet had grown by another five warships and Orion VII had been liberated. Sensing that Clark was on the run, Hague ordered all attack fleets to head for Mars to begin the final attack on the capital of the Earth Alliance. The Battle for Mars was a short and bitter fight that had been decided well before it had even begun. Depleted by desertions, defections and battle losses, the only major formation still loyal to Clark was the Fourth Destroyer squadron under General Leftcourt. Clark's Destroyers deployed near Mars, cutting off the direct approach to Earth and acting as a threat to Hague's flank should he bypass Mars entirely. Hague's fleet jumped from hyperspace to demand the surrender but Leftcourt gave the attack order and the two sides clashed. Losses on either side of the line were heavy, Hague's fleet losing three warships and Leftcourt losing five. With over half his force gone, Leftcourt fell back toward the spacedocks in orbit of Mars and in effect opened the door to Earth for Hague. Seizing his chance, Hague ordered a jump into Earth orbit and an end to the war. The Battle of Earth was in fact not anything close to the naval engagements which had marked the Civil War until now. As Hague's Destroyers closed with Earth, Clark activated the Defense Grid and began to fire every piece of ordnance toward the rebel forces. It was then that the resistance movement on Earth revealed itself and infiltrated Earth Dome, killing those guards loyal to Clark and advancing on his office. Seeing that all was lost, Clark ordered the Defense Grid to begin firing on Earth in an effort to take as many people with him as possible. As the doors to his office were broken down, he shot himself with his PPG, the codes for the Defense Grid scrambled beyond retreival. In orbit, the massive Aegis Platforms began to turn toward the planet and Hague immediately guessed what was happening. Ordering a full attack against the platforms, he sent a signal calling for all ships in the Sol System to aid the releif of the planet. Jump points opened and General Leftcourt's remaining ships joined the attack while from the spacedocks the damaged Clavigura and Assurance under General White added to the fusilide. One by one, the platforms were destroyed under the relentless attacks of the Destroyers and Dreadnoughts until only two were left. Ready to fire, both platforms were rammed by rebel ships, the Evictus and Terran Pride, the resulting explosions totally obliterating both craft and the platforms. With the planet finally secured, Hague and his command staff along with most of the fleet's Marines landed and took control of Earth Dome. Within the week, the Earth Alliance Senate had been reestablished as the governing body of the Alliance. |
