A design predating the Earth-Minbari War, the Nova Dreadnought was intended to be the last word in capital ship design. However, actions against the Minbari Fleet soon proved that the Nova Dreadnought was too slow and poorly armed to fight the Minbari Sharlin Cruisers and smaller Frigates, often falling prey to the long ranged guns of their enemies before closing to deliver a killing blow. More of a heavy fire platform than a true warship meant to charge into the heart of the melee, the Nova Dreadnought can lay down a massive barrage pattern while deploying fighters at range to keep the enemy forces away from its vulnerable flanks. Also able to act as a transport and heavy assault vehicle, the Dreadnought can weather a storm of fire from planetary guns to deliver ground troops onto the surface in order to contest a planet. The major flaw in the Nova's design is the slow speed combined with what would now be considered relatively light guns for a vessel of such size. With the addition of the newer Omega Destroyers to the fleet, the Dreadnoughts are more and more often used in the support role rather than in a totally agressive fashion. At the present date, only one Nova Dreadnought remains as a fleet flagship for the Earth Alliance Navy. |
