SITUATION IN EAST TIMOR

On Monday, August 30, virtually all those registered to vote cast ballots in the election to determine the status of East Timor. This was an evident demonstration of the desire of the people of East Timor to have a say in their future and a great display of courage in the face of the deadly violence that has afflicted East Timor in recent weeks. The people of East Timor have stood firm in the face of determined efforts by armed pro integration militia to disrupt election activities.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Hutt River Province Principality is deeply concerned by the reports which indicate that militia activities continue and develop. Security must be provided and order must be maintained throughout an orderly transition to East Timor's independent status. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Hutt River Province Principality urges all parties involved to take effective action to restrain armed militia groups from terrorizing the population of East Timor and subverting the United Nations - administered process.
