Cubbon Lodge, The House of
a 100 Pillars.
When I asked my friend Nadar Mirza about old houses of his family, he spoke
of his grandmothers place on Cubbon Road, and I was delighted that it was
the "Cubbon Lodge" which was so often mistaken for "Cubbon Hotel" a few meters
further down. The buiding is camouflaged by a petrol pump infront and Capitol
Hotel at the side. The other western entrance is near the All India Radio
studios. This too has a beautiful old building but due to "National Security"
I am not able to take a photo of the same. Nadar can be seen walking his
dog around the compound. We could not go inside to phtoograph the roof and
skylites as the occupants objected. There is lots of wood-work inside. What
is remarkabe about this house is that it has more pillars than necessary
to support a single ground floor. One can assume that because of the 'pillar'
styles, Asgar Ali may have built the same. There is a story that he was commissioned
to build 100 houses around Bangalore for the British Officers, and we are
not in any position to say which ones he built, because this house belonged
to the Mirza family, there is a good possibility that Ali building this is
true, as I think that he may have been related to the Mirza family.

Thought for the Day:
" Blessed are you poor, For yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you
who hunger now, For you shall be filled. Blessed are
you who weep now, For you shall laugh. Blessed are you when men hate you,
And when they exclude you, And revile you, and cast out your name as evil,
For the Son of Man's sake. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy! For indeed
your reward is great in heaven, Fon in the manner their fathers did to the
prophets. But woe to you who are rich, For you have received your consolation.
Woe to you who are full, For you shall hunger. Woe to you who laugh now, For
you shall mourn and weep. Woe to you when all men speak well of you, For
so did they fathers to the false prophets."
Holy Bible: Luke 6:20-26
