A group of seven soldiers for hire, the Shichinin-tai went from war to war seeking work. They were known for their brutal killing methods- which involved hacking people to pieces and burning them to ashes. No mercy was shown to any women or children by this group, either when it came to a job. Rumored to have the strength of a thousand men, the Daimyou (feudal lords) of the area began to fear the group. Joining together against them several daimyou sent armies to eliminate them. First they were chased into the mountains, then, they were finally cornered in a deserted snowy village in the north. There they were decapitated. Fearful that their angry spirits would still remain in the area, the Shichinin Grave was built in hopes to appease their souls. Ten years later- and after the reappearance of the Shikon no Tama, the graves were smashed open, and rumours of Zombies began to spread. This was in part to Naraku, using Shikon shards to restore life to the bones of the seven members. They then took orders from him to go out and kill those that opposed him- namely InuYasha's group, Kouga and Sesshoumaru. |
Going by the anime, Jakotsu had met and traveled with Bankotsu long before the Shichinin-tai had even formed. The two of them working as youkai exterminators and taking odd jobs just for sport to pass the time. Once the Shichinin-tai was formed, Jakotsu fell third in command (after Bankotsu and Renkotsu) and fought with his sword, the Jakotsutou. This intricate sword appears to be a single blade, but is actually a chain of blades connected together, providing a deadly blink-and-you-miss-it killing technique. Jakotsu's personality is rather unique and varies depending on the situation. He can go from cute and innocent to sadistic and violent if the right "cute guy" happens to walk his way. He seems to have no problem flaunting his homosexuality- wearing a hiked-up pink yukata, lipstick and openly hitting on anyone he finds worthwhile. As for life, he seems rather laid back about it; looking at things in terms of "well at least I had fun" rather than regretting what he missed out on. |
After one day deciding to gather together strong men and form an army, Bankotsu became the leader of the Shichinin-tai. The youngest of the group and sometimes rather impulsive and emotional, Bankotsu is more than just another bad-guy. Fighting with his halberd and "partner," Banryuu, Bankotsu is a formidable foe- skilled with both his blade and his fists. His personality is very child-like at times: getting frustrated over not being able to write out the threatening message he wants, asking Jakotsu his opinion on Naraku and just having a fun-loving nature about him. Although he's the leader, Bankotsu rarely acts highly or "above" any of the other members. As shown by the way they address him as "oo-aniki" (elder brother)- the Shichinin-tai are very close, like family, to each other. They even use the term "nakama" (a friendship bond so close it's like family) to refer to each other. This close bond also lets Bankotsu's emotional side show. He's visibly upset at the deaths of his comrades, and does seek to comfort others over the grief. (His gentle touch to Renkotsu's shoulder when Ginkotsu was lost showing a depth that goes far beyond that of a mere "leader" to these men). And he's brought to tears once by Jakotsu's trust in him, even reaching over and hugging the other man to express his happiness. Bankotsu's view on life is similiar to Jakotsu's, as in it's without regret. He believes in living each moment to the fullest, knowing that his time on earth is limited. |
