SYNOPSIS
That's Incredible! - an imitation of NBC's hit show, Real People, seemed to be the freak-show of the 1980's!
Some of the incredible stunts performed over the years included: a dentist who could cure pain with a clothespin; an acrobat who leapt over cars speeding at him at 60mph; a man who caught arrows with his bare hands; a daredevil who caught a bullet in his teeth; a skydiver who jumped out of an airplane while handcuffed and strait-jacketed; a yogi sandwiched between two slabs of nails and a group of karate experts who leveled a barn!
However, this show had less to do with "incredible people" than with those seeking attention - at any cost - including their lives. In an attempt to make it on the show, one man nearly lost a foot and another burned his fingers to the stumps, while a third one suffered several fractures and a ruptured aorta. Also, six people died trying to make it on That's Incredible!.
When Time Magazine announced its 1980 achievement awards, That's Incredible! was vote "Most Sadistic Show." An expose in a May 1982 issue of TV Guide revealed several of the programs' stunts to be rigged or, even worse, straight out frauds. But this had absolutely NO effect on the shows' producers.
However, That's Incredible! wasn't all bad. It did have informative segments on breakthroughs in medicine and people overcoming their handicaps. But the show was best represented by the picture of a man juggling spinning chainsaws while a caption on the screen read, "Do not try this yourself!"
Four years after the show left the airways, it returned under the new title Incredible Sunday. Nothing much had changed and John Davidson had returned as the show's host. This time he was joined by Christina Ferrare and, in early 1989, by teen actress Tracey Gold. The first episode was about a South African woman who became the surrogate mother for her own daughter. So, she not only gave birth to her children, she also gave birth to her grandchildren! Now THAT IS INCREDIBLE!!!
