By examining some of the various feminist interpretations of the archaeological data available from prehistory, it is clear to see that a great deal of work is left to be done. Western androcentric bias clouds not only how women are looked at in the archaeological record, but also how they are treated as professional anthropologists. Women anthropologist are confronting these challenges head on by approaching extant data with an eye towards understanding gender roles in the past. Given the unemployment and underemployment of women in anthropology, however, it is an uphill struggle for the feminist and revisionist voices to be heard. Fortunately, Gender Anthropology is a quickly growing field and the more researchers who look at the archaeological record for evidence that women were not silent, weak or unimportant in prehistory, the more a clearer picture of Paleolithic life can emerge. |
