The Eight Peaks

This is a tough walk, and takes a long time. The weather is important, so set out on a day when it's nice and clear and early in the morning!

The walk is 28.8km (16 miles) and takes roughly 7 hours depending (obviously) on how fast you walk/run. The highest point is 852m, the top of Grasmoor.

Start in Keswick town centre, then head NW trough the fields, across the bouncy bridge to Portinscale. Then head SW towards Ullock via the narrow paths and the fields. Follow the road to Little Braithwaite then turn S onto the path which runs alongside the Newlands Beck. Follow this for about 1k until you get to a footbridge and path going W. Follow this to Uzzicar, then go NW a few hundred metres to the road. Turn S and head towards Stoneycroft. Pass the buildings then take the path up at the foot of the hill. Now the hard work begins.

Climb the path to the top of the first peak, Rowling End, at 433m. Not very high, but it's bloody steep! At the top, the path goes West. Follow it and climb the second peak, Causey Pike at 637m. This is more like it, and there is a small scramble at the top. Stick to the path and it will take you across Scar Crags and up to the top of peak three, Sail, at 773 m. Now cross the ridge known as the Scar and race upto the top of peak four, Crag Hill, at 839. Descend to the crossroads, the go straight on and up peak five, Grasmoor, at 852m. You have now reached the highest point of the walk, and can think about heading back.

Double back on yourself to the crossroads, then head N. Go past another crossroad near some waterfalls (which you can't see) and head N up peak six, Sand Hill at 756m, then quickly go down the other side and up peak seven, Hopegill Head, at 770m. Be carefull at the top, the N-side is very sheer. Follow the path that goes E, reach the top of a nameless peak (what we dubbed 'New Grisedale') then go NE and climb the last peak, number eight, Grisedale Pike, at 791m. A clean run home you think? Think again.

The descent down Grisedale is long and tiresome. But you have to do it, so head down and come out in Braithwaite. There is pub here, so refresh yourself with a pint of Jennings bitter. Then get on the path through the campsite to Little Braithwaite and then go back the way you came.
