U-571
We have all heard the rumours about how crap this film is, but I though I would watch it as I had nothing else to do. So I sat there with a glass of wine and gave it a shot.

The trailers for this film say something like, "In 1942 an American submarine set out on a mission that was to change the war!"

Bollocks

Everyone knows that HMS
Aubretia, a Royal Navy corvette, used depth charges to force the U-boat 110 to the surface and abandon ship. Scuttleing failed and a boarding party from HMS Bulldog captured the enigma machine and code books. No yanks involved.

But the film doesn't just twist history inside out, it pushes it through a black hole into a far away dimension.

The US sub sails off and quickly captures U-571 before being destroyed by a U-boat. The remaining US crew of about 7-10 men then piloted the U-boat whose normal complement would have been 3-4 times that number, and everything was in German, but wait, two German speakers quickly translated everything.

The yanks then defeat the fully crewed German sub with ease. Hmm.

The US crew also understood metres perfectly well, something which is far from the truth.

Later they defeat a German destroyer, pinpoint accuracy shots from green looking seamen while the Germans (who were renown for their accuracy) missed all the time.

Also they spead loads of time wet. The water they were in would have killed them in minutes, yet they never even shiver! Crap.

The plane that spotted them at the end was US. This is highly unlikely given that most (all in 1942?) Western Approaches were covered by the RAF.

There is also a coloured sailor on the original US submarine who is shouting at some captured Germans something like, "Hey! Never seen a black man before? Well get used to it boys!" This is unbelievable, it portrays the US as being a land of equal rights and no discrimination. The truth is, however, that blacks were separated from whites in the US armed forces during WWII.

What a load of bollocks!
