RobertWB: I think I will just wear a hat so you wont notice my need for a haircut. BeeD: Thanks Andrew...I will try and find it here in Sao Paulo RobertWB: Thanks Robert. SusanneN: I have a suggestion regarding webcams, try to find some information online about problems with different models as some are really MUCH worse than others. TeresaD: lol bob BeeD: nice idea RenataS joined the room. RobertWB: Do the webcams require any additional programs. SusanneN: I had to buy and return three before I found the fourth one... RobertWB: Which one do you use, SusanneN? SusanneN: and now I realize I have no drivers for Windows XP BeeD: I have a laptop...how do I fix one on top of the screen? SusanneN: It is a good one, for a firewiire connection TeresaD: there are webcams for laptops, bee JeanMC: you put the camera on the side AndrewP: some webcams have attachments that can attach the webcam to the top of your laptop Bee JeanMC: with a small tripod RobertWB: I dont have fire wire, do I need to get that too? SusanneN: I can palce it at several locations as I like TeresaD: i put mine on top of the lid with a gadget that came with it for that purpose, bee BeeD: what is firewire? RenataS left the room (signed off). SusanneN: nope, there are also USB cams RobertWB: Good, I have usb. SusanneN: Firewire is a fast port BeeD: I see...I have usb RobertWB: Fire wire is a cable used for quick sending of digital signal. RenataS joined the room. SusanneN: it is common standard here on newer computers RobertWB: and a port I guess, too AndrewP: firewire is like a usb connection that is very fast and works well in transmitting the images onto your computer and from there to the web DonaldT: hello renata AndrewP: so think of firewire as form of usb cable BeeD: How do I know if I have a firewire? SusanneN: yes, and the quick transmissing is an advangate for webcamming RenataS: hello don ClaireB: today the newer computers have usb2, and there are now some webcams that support usb2 DonaldT: hello every one AndrewP: Bee do you know what model of laptop you have SusanneN: there must be somewhere you can check your PC conmfigration? RenataS: mine is usb2 RitaZ: Hi, Donald RenataS: works a treat ClaireB: firewire is called ieee1394 AndrewP: Yes, that's true,USB 2 is faster than firewire DonaldT: mine is both TeresaD: hello, donald! BeeD: Toshiba Sattelite...but do not know the model...my son gave it to me and said it was good for all multimedia ClaireB: older firewire is referred to as 400, and newer firewire is 800 ClaireB: yes, but usb2 is not faster than firewire 800 DonaldT: hello teresa TeresaD: with me it's stiull us giving our sons the computers! lucky you, bee! ;-) RobertWB: I am starting to see why they are called Webheads... SusanneN: Do NOT buy a cheap webcam such as the Philips ToUCam TeresaD: lol bob RenataS: my puter has no floppy disk any more BeeD: This is the son you are going to meet... TeresaD: well, i'll sure compliment him on such a wonderful gesture! ClaireB: the point is that if your computer is newer and supports usb2, you should buy a cam that supports usb2 in order to take advantage of the faster speed SusanneN: bob, this is the amazing aspect of our informsl sessions here; we can small talk as well as get involved into very technical discussions RobertWB: Can I add USB2 to an older computer. RenataS: my cam is called the pharaoh's eye RobertWB: I see that SusanneN. BeeD: where do I find information about the model? ClaireB: yes, my husband says that you can purchase a usb2 card to an older computer TeresaD: wow, renata. what a name! RenataS: it's a wormy eye on a long metal cable that bends in any direction RobertWB: I wonder if I can get it on an external port. RobertWB: I likethat one Renata....sounds exotic. AndrewP: Bee: I have a link now on the Toshiba Satellite do you want me to put in here for you SusanneN: mine is from a company cammed Pyro and it looks like an eye ClaireB: if you get a usb2 card, it will have an exdternal port BeeD: it's windows XP with Nvidia grapics, pentium 4 SusanneN: it worked on my old mac powerbook, but I still need to find teh upcated drivers for Windows XP RobertWB: Someone even mentioned using cellphone technology to broadcast video. BeeD: this is all I can find next to the keyboard RenataS: yes it's called foma AndrewP: I'm sure you will have a firewire port on that model do you want the link to that model in here now RenataS: all the kids have them here in Japan TeresaD: that's right, bob. one of our friends in japan or south korea, i think RenataS: only i doN't think it' live RenataS: it's like mailing video clips BeeD: let me see if I can find the booklet andrew... RobertWB: Perhaps that was you, Renata? RenataS: i have it on my cell phone too only RenataS: i can't be bothered to learn how to use it AndrewP: I have the page on Toshiba up now if you want it, I'll put in a private message to you SusanneN: I think this is what Aiden has tried from Taiwan, with her Bluetooth cell phone RenataS: at least i think i do ClaireB: with some pc omputers, even if you have a firewire port, you have to have an adaptor to use a web cam BeeD: Andrew , got it...Series Satellite 1410/2410 MargaretD joined the room. SusanneN: for some reason, webcam technology is tricky RenataS: the manual is aobut three centimeters thick RitaZ: hi, Maggie! SusanneN hugs Maggi ClaireB hugs maggi MargaretD hugs all around ClaireB: vance is "here" but he is having trouble getting in RobertWB: Good morning< Maggi RenataS: yes, bob that was me RenataS: sorry, i'm grankageva most places ClaireB: vance says that he can change rooms, but he cannot leave his office in the top frame. he is asking for suggestions MargaretD: I was here for an hour but saw no one and I guess I lost my connection RobertWB: I have read some articles somewhere about using them in conjunction with classwork. AndrewP: BJ, I see there have been some behind the scenes changes to TI's portal, we don't need to refresh when someone enters anything else I should know TeresaD: hi, maggi AndrewP: Hi Maggi RenataS: wow so aiden is doing something with cell phones too RobertWB: I suppose, at some point, we may have to stop calling them phones. DonaldT: ok people im of need sleeep chat again soon ClaireB: can anyone offer assistance to vance? RobertWB: Bye, Donald. SusanneN: bye donlad TeresaD: bye, donald. sweet dreams MargaretD: the 'Germans call them handys RenataS: work tomorrow, teresa thank you for your mail, will write a reply soon, RitaZ: bye, Donald SusanneN: and goodbye Renata RobertWB: Handys, I like that. ClaireB: he is in a cybercafe and says that he can open only one browser window at a time VennyS: hi? SusanneN: oh, that's not so fun. Poor Vance ClaireB: vance just came back from the pyramids!! VennyS . o O ( lagging? ) AndrewP: hi Venny ClaireB: his second visit, he says RobertWB: Maybe Vance should use his cell phone. SusanneN: Venny, are you having trouble reading us? MargaretD: maybe try alado and come from there SusanneN: we could try to meet Vance elsewhere? JeanMC left the room (signed off). ClaireB: i think he has limited options in the cybercafe SusanneN: Claire, are you in touch with him , and where? SaraMa joined the room. SusanneN: hello Sara! TeresaD: welcome, sara! RobertWB: Hello Sarama. RitaZ: hello, Sara VennyS: hi SusanneN: welcome to our Sunday Webheads chat BeeD waves to Sara MargaretD: Hi Sar SaraMa: Hello everyone!! Sorry for being late... ClaireB: yes we are here in tapped in a private window, but he can't get into here. i suggested to him that we go to yahoo. ClaireB: right now I think he and bjb are chatting ClaireB: hi sara SusanneN: there's no exact meeting hour on Sundays, Sara, people come and go as they can BeeD: Take two computers Vance...and sit on two chairs :-) TeresaD: lol bee vances joined the room. VennyS left the room (signed off). ClaireB: so today you are demoted to vances ClaireB: hi jean ClaireB: bj is very clever lol JeanMC: Bonjour Claire vances: well, sorry about yesterday SusanneN: Vance, I wish I could have joined your Cairo presentations. it seem to have been very succesful SaraMa: So do I. Pity it wasn't recorded SusanneN: I WAS ready in Yahoo yesterday morning just in case you needed a helpful hand, but had to leave around noon ClaireB: those firewalls can be pesky RobertWB: Isnt there a transcript? VennyS joined the room. TeresaD: wb, venny VennyS waves Hi to you SusanneN: yes, Sara, we'll have to do with the printed speech amd all the reports from those who were present ClaireB: susanne, when it is noonyour time, what is the GMT? ClaireB left the room (signed off). VennyS feels lagging today?! MargaretD: it is 2 pm here SusanneN: Rober, I think that the recording from Learning times is saved as kind of a standalone tape you can playback, complete with chat, voice and shared whiteboard ClaireB joined the room. MargaretD: GMT 1200 is 1pm here SusanneN: Calire, I live at GMT +1 vances: anyway we're still trying to catch up on sleep here in cairo RobertWB: Maybe that is wherer I saw it Susanne, I will hunt for it later today. SusanneN: just like Maggi vances: it's a town that doesn't sleep much TeresaD: is it saved automatically, sus? at LT, i mean? vances: the conference was only in the afternoon vances: now I know why ClaireB: yes, people eat and stay out very late in cairo SusanneN: Teresa, no it is not, and I still need to learn more about how it is actually done - the save procedure, I mean ClaireB: so you went out and painted the town last night? SusanneN: I've not had so many occasions to practise with moderator priviledges yet, in LT RobertWB: I think there is something that the moderator has to set or turn on, In LT in order to record. MargaretD: is there much to paint in Cairo? SusanneN: Yes, I think so, too. We''l find a time to practise it some day ClaireB: oh yes, plenty to paint RobertWB: Please do , I am scheduled to do a presentation there, and am very nervous about it. ClaireB: nervous about cairo? RobertWB: But looking forward at the same time. vances: this town gets painted pretty thick RobertWB: NO about LT> vances: it's a swinging place TeresaD: it's a great environment, bob ClaireB: yes TeresaD: and very pleasant looking RobertWB: I love it, I'm just not sure I am up to the task at hand RobertWB: I am making a presentation on Moodle. SusanneN: Robert, I've got an office in LT, so we could arrange a training session if you like TeresaD: bob, let us know when it is, please RobertWB: I would love that Susanne, can you bc with me a date and time. BeeD: May I join you Sus? RobertWB: I beleive it is February 24.... RobertWB: now I am even more nervous...if you all show up... RobertWB: haha TeresaD: fine, bob, but keep us posted BeeD: I would love to see Moodle as well SusanneN: That is on TOOLS day in Learning times RobertWB: I have asked Martin Dougiamas to join in, but have not heard back yet. TeresaD: i'd like to be part of that practice session too, sus RobertWB: Yes, ToolsDay. SusanneN: Tere as I've told you, please consider my office in LT as yours . as well :-) vances: we just got moodle on our server in Abu Dhabi but I have'nt been back to play wiht it TeresaD: thank you, sus. very sweet of you :-) vances: what kind of presentation are you giving bob? SusanneN: The advantage is that an owner can give the priviledge to others RobertWB: Now you have really opened a door, SusanneN. SusanneN: the priviledge of being a facilitator, I mean RobertWB: I am just introducing the idea of using Moodle as a collaborative device. SusanneN: the reason why I was goven an office in LT was because I needed it for teh CPsquare workshop ClaireB: are you using moodle on y our own server or on theirs? RobertWB: Really, just planting a seed for people to explore Moodle, I think. TeresaD: great, bob SusanneN: I have only one problem with all this: RobertWB: So if anyone has suggestions or experience with Moodle, email or yahoo me. TeresaD: we need seeds. that's how we grow, bob :-) SusanneN: our calendar in the six week workshop is already so full!!! SusanneN: we have about ten chat presentations vances: we can discuss it on the webheads list TeresaD: but we can *cram* it in, sus RobertWB: So we will just record them all and watch them for the next six weeks... SusanneN: Tere, what do you mean by cram here? I'm not sure I understnad teh term RobertWB: Do the webhead chats, get archived? SusanneN: I know that there is something called cram schools in Japan TeresaD: we'll just *fit* bob's session in somehow, sus TeresaD: these chats at TI are archived and sent to your mailbox, bob TeresaD: the others we have to save RobertWB: Well, you are all invited, and if that doesn't work, I am no expert on Moodle, but would love to talk to anyone about what I know about it. VennyS left the room (signed off). TeresaD: we are here to learn and help one another, bob AndrewP: Bob, how long have you been working with Moodle? RobertWB: Not very long, Andrew. Less than 6 months. TeresaD: it's great that we have people wanting to explore tools we haven't contemplated in our session. no room for everything! RobertWB: In fact, that is part of why I wish I hadn't volunteered but no one else brought it up and I dont think that many there were familiar with it AndrewP: have you developed a course on it yet SaraMa left the room (signed off). RobertWB: I am in the process of developing several, You can look at www.elderbob.com/Classes. RobertWB: There are some you can see, but the really good ones I have invisible...haha. BeeD: there is a full stop at the end of the Url...remove it when you click on the address RobertWB: sorry, I didnt see that. BeeD: it's ok...just warning the others :-) RobertWB: That is something I need to stop doing...and then just a few days back I found out that I am only supposed to put one space between sentences not two.... vances smiles and sips turkish coffee RobertWB: I wish they would stop chaning the rules...I had just now learned them all.haha. SaraMa joined the room. BeeD: I love all the different languages! is it a translator? RobertWB: I can smell teh aroma of that coffee. RobertWB: It can be set to tranlate a number of things in different languages....I dont speak any of them, so I dont know how accurate they are. RobertWB: I will make that part of the presentation. BeeD: going to have some Brazilian coffee myself...would anyone like some? RobertWB: I think there are like 30 language modules. AndrewP: Well I'm off to make some US coffee, wish I had some of Vance's Turkish Coffee instaead and make some breakfast, so I'll say bye to all till next week RobertWB: By Andrew... RitaZ: bye, Andrew TeresaD: bye, andy BeeD: what kind of translator is this? it's quite accurate for Portuguese and Polish...:-) AndrewP: Turkish and Brazilian coffee sounds more appealing but I'll settle for the real rather than the virtual this morning. bye everyone RobertWB: So I take it that these Sunday morning events are sort of come and gol. RobertWB: go\ AndrewP left the room (signed off). RitaZ: and Bee..., yes, some Brazilian coffeee for me, please! ClaireB: yes, like a bus station RobertWB: and how long do people usually stay around. BeeD: bye Andrew and thanks for the advice and explanation ClaireB: speaking of bus stations, I need to leave --- bye all BeeD passes a tray of freshly brewed fragrant Brazilian cafezinho SaraMa: Thanks Bee!! I really needed that!! RobertWB: Bye Claire, nice to meet you. RitaZ: bye, Clari, and bye all, im also leaving, after having learnt sth , thanks! RobertWB: Bye Rita. MargaretD: does it translate word-for-word Bee? ClaireB left the room (signed off). RitaZ left the room (signed off). BeeD: let me check RobertWB: It think that it mainly translates the things that the instructor sets up in advance. SaraMa: One question Bob. How long have you been working with Moodle? RobertWB: I am not fully aware of how much it will translate yet, but I will be prepared to answer that next week. RobertWB: Less than 6 months...is it that bad... BeeD: sort of yes...but sounds quite natural MargaretD: that would help to avoid some serious problems vances is drinking coffee just outside the cyber cafe door with a lovely lady from Tunisia SaraMa: I'm really interested in learning about it. I've heard of it, but I've never downloaded it. Is is difficullt to set up? SaraMa: I mean you need to work with it at a server that allows php and Mysql? RobertWB: The learning curve seemed quite fast to me, SaraMa. My biggest difficulties were setting it up, but my web host helped me and once it was us, the rest is fairly self explanatory... MargaretD: with Germanand English there are problems with word order RobertWB: I beleive that is correct Sara, and I am not good with either of those. SusanneN: Oh, Vance, sounds interesting RobertWB: ONe of the other things that is nice about it, is that it is open source and there is a good web list serv that can answer questions for you... SaraMa: Thnaks. I'll have a look at it and try to make it work. I'm not good with Mysql but I've tried some bits with php vances: the lady left BeeD -( RobertWB: Id really like to learn more php. fortunately my webhost is quite good at that...I am pretty much self-taught so I miss a lot of thing.s vances: she got tired of my hopping up every few minutes to run in and check the monitor SusanneN: Sara, your experiences are needed, some day I'm gonna get serious about learning how to make homepages fro real TeresaD: what did you do to her, vance?! BeeD: must have pinched her if she was hopping up.... vances: I want to learn about php too, and also more about this tunisian lady RobertWB: Did she know anything about php? SusanneN: Oh - a confilct between your real and virtual frinds? RobertWB: two birds with one stone... SusanneN: did you try to imress teh lady with your online connections? SaraMa: Sorry I missed that bit about the Tunisian lady. Electrivity failed here so I had to leave and come back. Did Vance find an interesting lady in Cairo? RobertWB: Well, now it is my time to go make some coffee...Cant beleive I have been up this long with out any... vances: I don't think it impressed her all that much but anyway, she's gone up to her room RobertWB: This was fun all, and I hope to see much more of you in the near future. RobertWB: Bye now... TeresaD: see the magic effect webheads can have on you, bob? vances: yes, it looks great to be interacting with you BeeD: It was good to see you Bob SaraMa: Bye Bob! SusanneN: public flirting online is less visible, Vance ;-) vances: this lady gave me her scarf at the pyramids and before she handed it over she sprayed it with her perfume BeeD: my favourites are Beach , Bus ride, Beach and Telephone...short videos TeresaD: csl, vance vances: csl?? BeeD: Vance, Vance... SaraMa: That looks great Bee. vances: was she trying to tell me something? Some hidden message? TeresaD: can't stop laughing, vance BeeD: be careful with the Tunisian around the corner waiting for you with a dagger TeresaD: no doubt, vance. or maybe some hidden curse! vances: anyway I'm wearing a heavily perfumed scarf right now SusanneN: I've got another tech gadget to share today... SusanneN: look at http://histv2.free.fr/cadrehistory.htm SusanneN: Vance, who gave you that scarf? vances: yes, let's talk about tech gadgets vances: scarf what scarf? vances: oh, this scarf ... SusanneN: this was from a search on the Portuguese author that Teresa mentioned earlier TeresaD: eca de queiroz, you mean. fabulous author, sus SusanneN: I read a book of his some time ago. SusanneN: yes, the book is called Civilizacao SusanneN: it is from 1896 and describes a rich guy in Paris who has got all the newest technologies in his home TeresaD: in portuguese it's called "A Cidade e as Serras", the city and the mountains TeresaD: it's a great book TeresaD: very up-to-date SusanneN: one is called the theatrohone, and is a kind of pay-per listening broadcast, direct from tehe SaraMa: There 's a link I also want to share. Probably you know it 'cause it's from BBC, but I think it's great to prepare materials based on it. SaraMa: http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/tamaraswift/dramatisation/act1/act1_1b.shtml SusanneN: I meant to say, broadcase direct from the Opera SaraMa: Not video but animation. I already prepared something on it, but i think it's great for teenagers. The materials I prepared are at http://www.elrebumbio.org/magic/exer/albion.htm SusanneN: Sara, I like this animation - the audio is very good vances: I have two minutes here and then I have to decide whether to buy more time PatN joined the room. SusanneN: I'll get back to iut when I have some time to waste, to entertain myself vances: last minute counting down vances: I guess I 'll let it log me off BjB goes to get laundry started SusanneN: I need to get offline soon BjB waves bye to Vance et al PatN left the room. vances: ok, I'll go over the transc eript BeeD: Looks great Sara...but some of the links to the BBC (tamara) are broken vances: what I missed while my scarf was being perfumed BeeD waves to Vance and warns him again about the knife vances left the room (signed off). SusanneN: I would like to let my recorder run for some more tim, but will say goodbye for now TeresaD: bye, sus SusanneN: See you in our workshop! It's great to always feel welcomed here. I'm in Australia Antonia. Where are you? JeanMC left the room (signed off). AntoniaM: Portugal, so it's late lunch-time MichaelAC: So you are a friend or colleague of Teresa? TeresaD: michael, antonia works at a british school only 5 mins away from my home that i attended when i was very little MichaelAC smiles AntoniaM: I met teresa at one of her webhead workshps TeresaD: i went there at the age of 5 MichaelAC: OK. I *think* I remember that. I always have trouble keeping upm with where and who all the webheads are! AntoniaM: Wow teresa, i somehow missed that you wernt to school there! TeresaD: it's a great private school attended by many children from embassies and multinational companies AntoniaM: there are so many webheads and working in so many fields in so many places! MichaelAC: Yes - Vance seems to remember us all and where we are from but don't. AntoniaM: yes, teresa, that's true, though i think maybe it's becoming a little more socially mixed than maybe it used to be... TeresaD: i did, antonia. and maria de lourdes, the director of the portuguese part of st. julian's invited me to go pseak for parents and students in 1999 - last century! ;-) MichaelAC: I guess V must be on his way back from Cairo MichaelAC: Are you here and awake Sus? TeresaD: he was with us earlier from a cybercafe MichaelAC: Ok I see TeresaD: no, she's just recording, mike MichaelAC: Is she doing the chat logs these days? AntoniaM: It would be great if you could come in again teresa...there's a few of us trying very hard to bring our teaching into internet...etc, but exams and things can be a gear pressure working against that more creative style... MichaelAC: It's the same all over Antonia TeresaD: no. she was here most of the time. left about 10 mins ago and just left it recording MichaelAC: I have the same issues with teachers here. This is what you wanted to address for GLD isn't it Tere? TeresaD: yes, michael. that was part of it. TeresaD: antonia, maybe we can arrange something, but not at this time. i'm real busy until the end of april. AntoniaM: OK tere!:) TeresaD: maybe we could try a workshop of the type that vance did in cairo yesterday TeresaD: i'll send you the link. just a sec, pls AntoniaM: Yes, 'fraid i can't instantly recall the details. i'll look it up on his page which i know how to find AntoniaM: ok, thanks for the offer of the link ChristinaT joined the room. AntoniaM: Hi, christine, how are you? ChristinaT left the room. MichaelAC: I guess Christina wanted to be somewhere else! AntoniaM: yep...did i ask you if you teach? MichaelAC: Me? At the moment I only teach teachers ChristinaT joined the room. TeresaD: wb, christina! MichaelAC: On how to use the Internet. And not just for ESL/EFL - all curriculum areas AntoniaM: Do you use internet facilities with that...forgive me if I've missed this info at some point-..... MichaelAC: I use the Internet all the time - as well as f2f sessions AntoniaM: Ha! :silly question!:) MichaelAC smiles TeresaD: christina, are you here for the webheads chat? AntoniaM: Micheal, where does one find the 'smile' butto facility? MichaelAC: Here in TI if you just type :) it converts it to the word smiles ChristinaT: sorry, not for me. i saw BJ is here, so i just step in and wish that i can have a help from her. ChristinaT: sorry for disturbing. i am leaving now... AntoniaM: thanks micheal:) MichaelAC: If you use the colon : anything you type after that appears as an action. For example< MichaelAC takes a sip of wine arlynf joined the room. MichaelAC: Hi Arlyn arlynf: Good morning! TeresaD: christina, you're not disturbing at all TeresaD: hello, arlyn arlynf: I had cable problems first thing, thought I would miss everyone! AntoniaM smiles arlynf: Hi Teresa! MichaelAC: You go it Antonia MichaelAC: got it AntoniaM: Is there a list of charactyers & there actions anywhere? arlynf: Arlyn :yawns arlynf: I don't got it! MichaelAC smiles AntoniaM: sorry...i know this is the slow-lerarners dept... MichaelAC: Just type :) Arlyn AntoniaM: me i mean not arltn! arlynf 0 arlynf smiles arlynf: Oh it's different from before AntoniaM / arlynf: no I'm a slow learner too Antonia, I've been here several times and I always forget the signals MichaelAC: Antonia - if you look under the actions menu (top right) the last one (text commands) gives you a list of the more common ones TeresaD: afk (((away from keyboard) for a while AntoniaM: that didn't work! :)....OK thanks micheal I'll have fun arlynf: Did many people come today? MichaelAC . o O ( wonders if A and A can work it out ) arlynf: Now how did you do that? MichaelAC: Apparently so Arlyn but I came v late myself SusanneN ) I'm back for a hile arlynf: Hi Sus! AntoniaM: I'm very forgetful anyway arlyn and it worries me that as i get older just as 'they' say i'm remembering my childhood! arlynf: Me too! MichaelAC: Arlyn type /th and follow it with what you are thinking SusanneN hugs Arlyn and everyone else who were not here wneh I went to care for housefuld duties arlynf . o O ( yawns ) SusanneN . o O ( likte this I think ) MichaelAC: Yep arlynf . o O ( I wonder if I'll ever remember this! ) AntoniaM . o O ( this is a good way to meet people, i'm enjoying it! ) MichaelAC: Like everything else Arlyn it's practice\ SusanneN: but to make me look smiling, it is much easier to type a : before a verb SusanneN smiles MichaelAC ) at Antonia ChristinaT left the room. MichaelAC: whoops arlynf: I tried that before 'yawns' and it didn't work MichaelAC smiles at Antonia SusanneN: This is the social category of "exchanging tips & tricks MichaelAC smiles arlynf: Christina must have had an emergency arlynf: Did Vance come today? AntoniaM laughs SusanneN: Yes, Vance logged in from a cybercafe in Cairo MichaelAC: Well I'm going to have a chat with my wife before going to bed. It was nice to see you all briefly arlynf: I'm so mad I missed the Cairo presentation AntoniaM: Some of us came quite late arlynf: G'nite Michael! SusanneN: he had som trouble getting all the way to TI, but he mangaed MichaelAC: Good night from the bottom half of the world AntoniaM: Night micheal :) SusanneN: managed to join us after all. SusanneN: Swet dreasm Michael arlynf: What's Aussie for beer? MichaelAC: Thanks Sus arlynf: just kiddiing? MichaelAC: Well if you really want the answer...wait for it.....piss MichaelAC: Piss has 2 meanings in Aussie lingo SusanneN th those aussies are weirdos arlynf: Oh my! not what I expected. Another time I'll explain, nForsters has a whole ad campain here and that's the slogan MichaelAC: Can't argue with that SusanneN: the other one is a verb? MichaelAC: Yes Sus SusanneN: like in "piss off"? SusanneN: learning everyday language AntoniaM: In portuguese there's a special word for draft beer 6 we kept getting bottled till we caught on arlynf: Or some other type of verb MichaelAC: Yes, and also to 'do a piss' (as in go to the toilet) arlynf: That's what I was thinking, you explained that very diplomatically MichaelAC smiles SusanneN: in Danish, that is also the vulgar term for urinating MichaelAC: Same here arlynf: same in English SusanneN: I think it is an onomatopoetikon MichaelAC: OK - with those charming thoughts I shall leave you! MichaelAC: Bye SusanneN: a word that describes the sound arlynf . o O ( hmm ) MichaelAC left the room (signed off). SusanneN: hey - could you do so with a territory if you were, say a fox? arlynf: Did anyone make it to Cairo? AntoniaM: Yes those sorts of words are fascinating Susanah, shall i call you suss? SusanneN: Buth was in Cairo with Vance, on location arlynf: Yes, dogs do it but it's still a vulgar term SusanneN: Please cal me Sus, Antonia SusanneN: dogs are SO vulgar arlynf: I was hoping to attend on Saturday but when Heard there wasn't any voice in LT I was bummed SusanneN: or even beasty arlynf . o O ( laughs at Sus ) SusanneN: there was no voice, Arlyn? what a pity arlynf: Well, I heard that there wouldn't be b/c of a firewall and that was my main reason for going. IN the end I overslept anyway. SusanneN: and I had to got to a family birthday SusanneN: where I met my grandchildren - so that was an OK day. AntoniaM: Sounds like a fun time sus ...how old are the grndchildren? SusanneN: Arlyn, I read that thought provoking article about the life of foreign language teachers SusanneN: they are between two and four years arlynf: Oh what did you think! Some well paid teachers disagree but I am poor and think it's on target AntoniaM: Mmmm...busy age and LOTS of fun... SusanneN: Our family has got a new generation, seven kids from two months to seven years AntoniaM: I think i read your article too, it's certainly an issue ...the status & income of TESL teachers... SusanneN: Arlyn, O think many people do not realize what it means not to have a well paid full time job arlynf: It's the health insurance that is the worst. I pay out of pocket for mine and it's more than my salary! AntoniaM: Yes, it's all those 'hidden' areas such as accomodation, health ...etc arlynf: You can't get a teaching job with benefits at a college in the US without a lot of difficulty or living in an obsure place AntoniaM: i can imagine arlyn arlynf: Yes, Antonia, that's why the schools only hire 'adjunct' professors --parttime work is everywhere SusanneN: In Denmark, our welfare system means that everyone has got acces to the health system SusanneN: the insurance is not individual but paid with our huge taxes AntoniaM: yes, denmark is probably a model for many other european countries...certainly for the UK arlynf: Most civilized countries have a health care system and this has been a political issue here for many years but no one wants to deal with it SusanneN: but there are tendencies towards more private insurance arrangements arlynf: Over half of American are uninsured! SusanneN: yes, Arlyn , this situation is scandalous AntoniaM: The capitalist model seems to be insidiously creeping in to every area even where there was a strong stae system arlynf: It's a bad idea SusanneN: I have never understood how the US policy about poverty and health can exist in a nation with such wealth AntoniaM: In the US it seems that it's always been like now, but in the UK the 1944 Social sec act was a big progress now being eroded arlynf: Teresa is still here but she stepped away a while ago SusanneN: Yes, Antonia, there is a lot of privatization afforts right now in Denmark, with our actual govenrment arlynf: Maybe to make coffee for me :) arlynf: Happy chinese New Year everyone SusanneN: Yes, tere is away, I suppose she's having lunch with her famliy AntoniaM: Portuguese coffee is great! :) One of the pleasures of living here.. SusanneN: Oh yes, the Chinese new year AntoniaM: year of the Monkey, my middle sosn's animal year SusanneN: I visited Portugal tow years ago, and met Teresa many time! We had a very pleasant time to gether AntoniaM: It should be a playful and energetic year? SusanneN: and a lot of coffee and good food AntoniaM: Mmmmm...I shall go for a late lunch soon i think... arlynf: I miss good coffee. I had some from Brazil but it's all gone now arlynf: I've never tried portuguese coffee AntoniaM: Port coffee is great and there is a wealth of language surrounding it...it's also a main social activity and area of life arlynf: Like in France. SusanneN: Arlyn, how do you cope with the poor emplyment condotions? I'm into a job hunt, but the colleges where I could eventaully qualify for a job, are ann in a process of heavy cut downs AntoniaM: Yep, think so, and tea in the uk! BjB left the room (signed off). SusanneN: we have a small generation seeking for education by now arlynf: I've been living on savings and it's been difficult. arlynf: I may not be able to attend TESOL b/c of the cost arlynf: My Dad is sick so I have to live close by to helpout but there is very little choice here SusanneN: so I'm trying to manage with some free lance work, very few expenses, and we're living from my husband's average pension arlynf: I was unemployed for 6 months b/c the schools didn't need anyone SusanneN: I know AntoniaM: It's nice that you stay to give your dad support...my dad is sick and sadly can't travel so we only get to see him summertimes now arlynf: But in Europe so many of the good things are free, for the middle to lower middle classes arlynf: IN the US nothing is free arlynf: Yes my Dad is dying and he only has several months to live, but it's unsure how many AntoniaM: i have other sybling who give him some support in london and he fights for his rights for help although even for the elderly and sick that's being eroded now... AntoniaM: i'm sorry arlyn arlynf: He can't travel either and I wish he could go someplace warm arlynf: Thanks arlynf: It arlynf: Its hard SusanneN: Antonia, I think that the UK system seem to get worse than before AntoniaM: I think its good you're with him, very important for you...i returned from a very interesting job in ecuador to be with my mum when she was dying and i needed to... AntoniaM: yes it is sus AntoniaM: i think, arlyn , its good you talk about it...i think that's so important arlynf: Yes, I needed to do this even though financially it isn't very smart. I am getting closer to him but in sad ways, like helping to write goodbye letters to people arlynf: I cried the whole time AntoniaM: i think that you are a very strong and special person to be able to do this arlynf: I don't know about that, but it's the only choice I think I have arlynf: Well, I'm getting teary and I still haven't had my morning coffee so I think I will run SusanneN: Arlyn, I hyst had a mail from aon old friend who tells me how she was mourning for her daddy still after twenty years because eshe was unable to care for him when h needed her most, and he died before she had the guts to come home. arlynf: I just wanted to say hello for a change, since I usuallly am asleep SusanneN: Well, hello, and goodbye dear Arlyn arlynf: Thanks Sus, that means a lot to me AntoniaM: hallo, its really good to meet you.. arlynf: Goodbye and nice to meet you Antonia SusanneN: We're so happy you're back with us again Arlyn AntoniaM: 'Bye take care and see ya:) arlynf: signing off arlynf left the room (signed off). SusanneN: well, I'll have to get working again, Antonia SusanneN: bye bye for now SusanneN: Also for Teresa who will read the chatlog later: a BIG hug! AntoniaM: Sus , I thin I'll get a coffee - ha!- now, so i'll sign off and then later i'm going to properly study our Webheads syllabus, Bye:) SusanneN: see you around SusanneN: Bye bye SusanneN left the room (signed off). AntoniaM: And 'bye to tere too, see you soon, good to talk, take care AntoniaM left the room (signed off). ChristinSm joined the room.
