dygonza (11:09:29): fine here
darcychristianson (11:09:33): ok here
susannenyrop (11:09:34): OK, might be feom my side then
katedodge2002 (11:09:36): I can here fine.
bdieu2001 (11:09:37): is there any way we can record the presentation?
katedodge2002 (11:09:40): hear
katedodge2002 (11:09:42): opps
dygonza (11:09:57): Fernanda is recording if I am not mistaken
bdieu2001 (11:10:08): a-r-t-i-c-u-l-a-t-e
mfr2000pt (11:10:14): I' m afraid you breathe too much
dygonza (11:10:26): that's sexy, Fern
bdieu2001 (11:10:29): too lively!
susannenyrop (11:10:42): Yes, Fernanda is trying to save the sound, breathing and vibrant alive
bdieu2001 (11:10:59): have you realized what awful students we are???
mfr2000pt (11:11:12): we are terrible
dygonza (11:11:14): we can listen to Michael while we communicate with each other, or send questions to him
bdieu2001 (11:11:14): gossiping about our teacher?
darcychristianson (11:11:24): lol
elderbobcoach (11:11:29): Bee, you are starting to see it from the student side.
agata_zieba (11:11:33): why not?
Yahoo! Messenger (11:11:38): antoniamelvin142 has joined the conference.
dygonza (11:11:41): we can be communicating with instant messenger
bdieu2001 (11:11:43): just normal human beings
grankageva (11:11:50): ???from 12 ro 19 in one leap?
teca2002pt (11:11:56): that's probably the unpleasant part about this - not having control of what's going on
dygonza (11:12:08): synchronous vs asynchronous tools?
bdieu2001 (11:12:17): from 50 to 15 is even worse...degenerating
dygonza (11:12:17): synchronous = real time
grankageva (11:12:18): lol
dygonza (11:12:20): like now
susannenyrop (11:12:20): are our class begining to lose attention on the speaker? I see a little uncontrolled smalltalk going on
dygonza (11:12:34): asynchronous = delayed time, like e-mail
dygonza (11:13:07): most people like human connection
katedodge2002 (11:13:27): Yes, it is amazing.
teca2002pt (11:13:39): lol. it's almost bedtime
dygonza (11:13:42): if you add voice to the human connection we are getting an extra connection
elderbobcoach (11:13:44): In fact, with the new speed of the Internet2, and VoIPv6 we will more likely be communicating with hand held devices more like telephones.
elderbobcoach (11:14:12): and add to that the ability to use video and store much larger amounts of information.
Yahoo! Messenger (11:14:19): antoniamelvin142 has left the conference.
Yahoo! Messenger (11:14:19): antoniamelvin142 has joined the conference.
grankageva (11:14:32):
bdieu2001 (11:14:41): how did you do that???
dygonza (11:14:56): it can also foster teacher-centeredness if the teacher holds the floor most of the time without promoting interaction
darcychristianson (11:15:15): also good for teaching pronounciation skills...
dygonza (11:15:17):
bdieu2001 (11:15:24): ahahahah?
maria_jordano (11:15:34): how did you do that Daf?
Yahoo! Messenger (11:15:42): realtangobabe has left the conference.
dygonza (11:15:45): two stars and 2 =
maria_jordano (11:15:45): you're crazy.....
bdieu2001 (11:15:54): **2=
bdieu2001 (11:16:03):
dygonza (11:16:04): renata taught me that
mikecogh (11:16:30):
katedodge2002 (11:16:35): falls down near mikecogh
mikecogh (11:16:44): Thanks Sus
darcychristianson (11:16:46): well said susanne! I agree...
katedodge2002 (11:16:47): opps that was a mistake
bdieu2001 (11:16:49): my computer silenced me so I feel restless....cannot participate so I begin getting naughty
dygonza (11:17:01): I would like to hear MC singing and playing the guitar too
teca2002pt (11:17:05): practice makes perfect, sus
maria_jordano (11:17:12): excuses, Barbara....
bdieu2001 (11:17:23): this would be fantastic...need some music!
dygonza (11:17:25): right, Bob
bdieu2001 (11:18:00): I think we could compose a little tune and a slogan for the webheads...a catchy tune...please
dygonza (11:18:12): we have some musicians among us
dygonza (11:18:17): not me btw
sesnawy (11:18:24): very true elderbob
elderbobcoach (11:18:27): And you know, no one made any of these people be here....
elderbobcoach (11:18:32): They all chose to be heree.
susannenyrop (11:18:41): I was hjust trying to express that I think Michael hs found a natural way to continue his prepared talk while he is able to skim the text chat and include questions and comments
elderbobcoach (11:18:41): and they continue to choose what and how they learn.
bdieu2001 (11:18:56): slide 11 is?
grankageva (11:19:11): i know traditional lecture things are not in fashion, but i like sitting here listening
dygonza (11:19:16): Wimba voice board and Wimba voice e-mail are asynchrnous voice tools
bdieu2001 (11:19:33): range of tools?
dygonza (11:19:50): (apologies for typos)
grankageva (11:19:57): it looks fine here
saramardi1972 (11:20:11): it looks good here
dygonza (11:20:23): yahoo free, easy to use
bdieu2001 (11:20:34): which one do you prefer?
susannenyrop (11:20:46): yes Bob, we have decided to meet this way, volunrtarily and for pleasure! This is an amazing source of learning when pople decide for themselves to pull the knowledge on board their own little personal vessels -and to sail the sea together!
dygonza (11:20:50): I have done great group work with yahoo messenger
maria_jordano (11:20:55): now msn is very good quality too...
bdieu2001 (11:20:56): thanks
saramardi1972 (11:21:06): So have I. Never tried it with yahoo before
dygonza (11:21:10): msn problem is with firewalls
grankageva (11:21:12): msn sound is problematic with my firewall
maria_jordano (11:21:12): much better thn before
grankageva (11:21:28): so is cam
teca2002pt (11:21:29): lol
maria_jordano (11:21:30): all is a question of trying
grankageva (11:21:43): yahoo is great
bdieu2001 (11:21:45): ah...need free tools
grankageva (11:21:54): icq people harrassed me terribly
dygonza (11:22:02): yahoo is very handy
teca2002pt (11:22:07): yes, renata. very true
maria_jordano (11:22:15): me too, grankageva
saramardi1972 (11:22:18): Where can we get Groove from?
bdieu2001 (11:22:23): sounds groovy
elderbobcoach (11:22:32): I think ICQ has just gotten much too large...
mfr2000pt (11:22:33): I like icq... allows multitasking
susannenyrop (11:22:44): peer to peer technologies like Groove - who has been using that yet?
saramardi1972 (11:22:48): thanks
bdieu2001 (11:22:49): freeeee!
dygonza (11:22:52): if you look at the links Michael sent on his web page for this session you will get all those links
saramardi1972 (11:23:06): thanks daf!
bdieu2001 (11:23:08): fantastic!
teca2002pt (11:23:44): i love elluminate. it's fabulous. has all the works
elderbobcoach (11:23:50): Thanks, Daff.
dygonza (11:23:51): yes, elluminate is great
grankageva (11:24:04): what so the school admin buys it?
dygonza (11:24:12): Jonathan will give us a tour to elluminate
bdieu2001 (11:24:31): they are not at this level yet...they are suspicious of all things technology believe it or not!
Yahoo! Messenger (11:24:36): antoniamelvin142 has left the conference.
elderbobcoach (11:24:41): I think that eventually, open source will provide us with a free version or something similar to elluminate.
susannenyrop (11:24:52): eluminate is what is used as a base for learning Times where Jonathan Finkelstein will give us a tour
grankageva (11:25:12): terrible options for kids looking at porn online
grankageva (11:25:19): during school hours...
bdieu2001 (11:25:22): very disturbing
Yahoo! Messenger (11:25:28): antoniamelvin142 has joined the conference.
bdieu2001 (11:25:29): kids do not listen to you
grankageva (11:25:31): that's all they register
bdieu2001 (11:25:35): kids get distracted
bdieu2001 (11:25:44): kids are having FUN!!!
antoniamelvin142 (11:25:54): thanks it worked again! You're very kind!
bdieu2001 (11:26:01): learning cannot be fun apparently
susannenyrop (11:26:18): well grankageva, even adults may get distracted from their work by admiring pictures of human beings!
bdieu2001 (11:26:20): I wonder how this notion was created
dygonza (11:26:26): did you hear me?
bdieu2001 (11:26:28): lol sus
darcychristianson (11:26:37): i heard you daf
susannenyrop (11:26:37): Daf, yes I heard you
grankageva (11:26:39): the computer facilities at school do not permit
saramardi1972 (11:26:39): yes daf, loud & clear
grankageva (11:26:44): all this
grankageva (11:26:56): oops sorry
bdieu2001 (11:26:59): we create sub-groups
elderbobcoach (11:27:01): Regarding people lookin at things that arent relevant to the class, well we said we wanted to move to something that the learner wants to learn.
susannenyrop (11:27:09): this is a parallel conversation!
susannenyrop (11:27:24): deifnitely sliding off topic
bdieu2001 (11:27:37): we are poli whatever this is called in anthropoly
darcychristianson (11:27:43): good point mike
bdieu2001 (11:27:45): anthropology
elderbobcoach (11:28:06): YOu could always throw up a really compelling picture to bring their focus back.
darcychristianson (11:28:11): lol
grankageva (11:28:17): even if we do
bdieu2001 (11:28:20): what kind of picture do you have in mind?
susannenyrop (11:28:22): Maybe we could call the audience to order!
grankageva (11:28:24): the question is what we will learn
bdieu2001 (11:28:36): we are communicating!
bdieu2001 (11:28:42): interacting1
dygonza (11:28:43): right, bee
susannenyrop (11:29:00): Ladies & Gentlemen! Are we having any relevant questions to our guest?
dygonza (11:29:02): that's what 's important with EFL students
darcychristianson (11:29:08): wow!
bdieu2001 (11:29:10): sus...this is awful!!!
susannenyrop (11:29:17): That was to call for attention!
mfr2000pt (11:29:18): your sound is getting worse, Mike
darcychristianson (11:29:28): it worked susanne
katedodge2002 (11:29:48): ok
darcychristianson (11:29:48): ok here
grankageva (11:29:50): ok for me
dygonza (11:29:50): that was a great project, MC
susannenyrop (11:29:54):
bdieu2001 (11:29:59): good but basser and basser
dygonza (11:30:01): I hear you fine
antoniamelvin142 (11:30:07): I've been on & off, but its ok when I'm in (the sound)
susannenyrop (11:30:13): basser ? more bass on Michael
susannenyrop (11:30:16): 's voice?
susannenyrop (11:30:48): Slide 16!
dygonza (11:30:56): Michael writes great songs if you did not know
susannenyrop (11:31:04): well, six hours from me
bdieu2001 (11:31:12): it is important when we have outsiders in our class...I did the same with blogs
susannenyrop (11:31:18): by car or by train
teca2002pt (11:31:26): almost as big as australia
dygonza (11:31:27): Anne's project was very interesting
susannenyrop (11:31:33): there are two ling bridges to pass, or a ferry
grankageva (11:31:40): anyone else being bombed byu friend invites???
edtec2002 (11:31:41): Sorry, but I need to leave now. Thanks, Michael, for making this presentation, and thanks to the moderators of Becoming a Webhead for setting this up. Bye.
bdieu2001 (11:31:47): wolves welcome fresh meat
teca2002pt (11:31:57): you're welcome, chris.
grankageva (11:31:59): it's very disturbing if it's anyone in the room please stop
elderbobcoach (11:31:59): Bye edtech.
Yahoo! Messenger (11:32:00): edtec2002 has left the conference.
teca2002pt (11:32:01): glad you came by
grankageva (11:32:05): not the time
antoniamelvin142 (11:32:05): Its new to some of us crumblies!
dygonza (11:32:07): yes, i had a voice chat with one of Anne's students
teca2002pt (11:32:18): it was a very interesting chat, mike
susannenyrop (11:32:20): maybe you can make your invitations later please
bdieu2001 (11:32:40): people are practical sus...the ids are just there
dygonza (11:32:40): we shared how people live in different countries with questions and answers
susannenyrop (11:32:47): Anne's students were indeed an interesting case
evawilden (11:32:54): thats it bee
teca2002pt (11:33:04): after 5 mins. of text chat they started voice chatting and it went on for 1 hr
dygonza (11:33:38): in my case, we only had voice chat
darcychristianson (11:34:04): great project!
elderbobcoach (11:34:14): And I hate to bring it up, but it is not just language learners...there is so much more that people are interested in,'
teca2002pt (11:34:20): absolutely lucy
teca2002pt (11:35:01): buth's idea was very interesting and innovative in the webhead community
dygonza (11:35:02): I think that content is what makes language lessons be successful, a need to communicate about something
bdieu2001 (11:35:49): buth's interactive experience was fantastic!
susannenyrop (11:35:52): Michael, will there be a few minutes for those who would like to let us hear their own voice ?
teca2002pt (11:35:56): and quite at ease considering the novelty of te situation for them, mike
bdieu2001 (11:37:09): imagine all this with a webcam!!!
teca2002pt (11:37:16): lol bee
maria_jordano (11:37:22): We could
agata_zieba (11:37:22): lol
bdieu2001 (11:37:26): rwl
maria_jordano (11:37:27): lol
dygonza (11:37:33): the problem is that webcams hinder voice
susannenyrop (11:37:39): Please raise your hand and type your topic so we can see how many can get access to the mic before we're summing up!
elderbobcoach (11:37:48): a web cam may eventually play it's own role in communication...but wehave to get greater speeds over the net first.
susannenyrop (11:37:57):
susannenyrop (11:38:04): slide 17
saramardi1972 (11:38:08): I have a question for later...
Yahoo! Messenger (11:38:13): antoniamelvin142 has left the conference.
mikecogh (11:38:30): http://users.chariot.net.au/~michaelc/fll/vol_resources.htm
elderbobcoach (11:38:31): If it's true that 80-% of communication is non-verbal, then Web cam will be come a necessity.
maria_jordano (11:38:32): that is a good thing I would like to comment with all of you..... have you noticed if your level of English has increased with WIA?
teca2002pt (11:38:55): hurrah for mike!
evawilden (11:39:06): stands up and applauds
teca2002pt (11:39:10): i'm afraid of my dial-up connection, mike
katedodge2002 (11:39:12): Thanks Mike!
maria_jordano (11:39:13):
jchaupart (11:39:14):
dygonza (11:39:15): standing ovation
grankageva (11:39:18): thank you mike, could you paste in the link to your homepage again?
evawilden (11:39:21): stands up and applauds
mikecogh (11:39:21):
darcychristianson (11:39:23): thank you mike!
katedodge2002 (11:39:23): cheers
bdieu2001 (11:39:24): claps wildly although there is no sound!!!
elderbobcoach (11:39:30): This has been a great session. Now I have to go to facilitate a telephone class. It will be a bit of a shift, but what a phenomenal opportunity for me to compare the two.
evawilden (11:39:35): how do you do tat applauding smiley?
saramardi1972 (11:39:35):
sesnawy (11:39:43): thanks Mike
mikecogh (11:39:44): Excellent Bob
teca2002pt (11:39:51): thank you mike. a very interesting presentation
luisa_rosa2003 (11:39:57):
Yahoo! Messenger (11:39:59): antoniamelvin142 has joined the conference.
evawilden (11:40:05): daf, how can I do that applauding smiley?
jchaupart (11:40:10): for Sus
maria_jordano (11:40:12): can you see the yellow face?
teca2002pt (11:40:12): very nicely said, bob
maria_jordano (11:40:14): there...
katedodge2002 (11:40:14): Right on Bob
mikecogh (11:40:14): Thank you Bob
dygonza (11:40:27): click on the smile face icon
evawilden (11:40:39):
dygonza (11:40:39): and you will get many smileys there
dygonza (11:40:42): great
evawilden (11:40:44): thanks
bdieu2001 (11:40:48): I feel this is a great tool with many opportunities for interactive work but as sara says it is impossible to use with crowded secondary classes
susannenyrop (11:41:07): Ok, just take the mic when you feel ready and there's a break -maybe that will work if were not all going to be loud and long wind
dygonza (11:41:11): I do not think so, bee
elderbobcoach (11:41:14): It seems to me that people in Australia have had many more years getting used to distance education...School of the air.
jchaupart (11:41:18): right for crowdy classes
dygonza (11:41:19): I have used it with 20 students at the same time
dygonza (11:41:25): divided in groups of 5
bdieu2001 (11:41:32): right
evawilden (11:41:35): they blur already
bdieu2001 (11:41:40): but yours are adults
dygonza (11:41:40): having differnt conference windows with each group
elderbobcoach (11:41:43): No matter how prevalent it was, it still allowed a populace to become accustomed to the idea of people learning at a distance.
susannenyrop (11:41:44): Bee, we're not secondary students but well behaving grownups!
bdieu2001 (11:41:50): not teenagers
dygonza (11:41:50): not so 18 19 years old
mikecogh (11:42:04): What do others think?
grankageva (11:42:09): in my case the school itself does not support me
grankageva (11:42:12): admiin
grankageva (11:42:14): funding
grankageva (11:42:19): access to puter rooms
teca2002pt (11:42:27): renata in japan
bdieu2001 (11:42:30): renata suzuki...japan
elderbobcoach (11:42:48): ITs a good point about the things that block us from using forms of new communication, but by all of us being here, new doors are being opened....time will pass...and then,\
bdieu2001 (11:42:48): me too
mikecogh (11:42:49):
susannenyrop (11:42:55): 40 students is terrible!!
bdieu2001 (11:43:01): same thing here...
elderbobcoach (11:43:17): I hear that about your students, but I wonder how many of the same students have cell phones...
elderbobcoach (11:43:35): We have to start thinking about new ways to combine technologies.
bdieu2001 (11:43:36): but I imagine japanese stds are quieter than brazilian ones...may be a stereotyped view
dygonza (11:43:39): I do not think so, Sus
mikecogh (11:43:48):
dygonza (11:43:49): it all depends on the kind of task you design
elderbobcoach (11:43:58): Cell phones are rapidly becoming hand held computers...with wireless internet.
bdieu2001 (11:44:02): sure
saramardi1972 (11:44:09): perhaps teachers feel as reluctant to use these tools as to give their students their cell phone number!!!
bdieu2001 (11:44:24): exactly
bdieu2001 (11:44:33): open up...
jchaupart (11:44:44): some technologies are not so popular as they are in big cities in first world countries
elderbobcoach (11:44:53): Or perhaps the schools could sign up for numbers for instructors...
jchaupart (11:45:06): waht about rural areas in countries as many of latin america?
elderbobcoach (11:45:29): Technology will get used whether the school offers it or not..
bdieu2001 (11:45:38): just like in business...people are plunging into informality...
elderbobcoach (11:45:43): If schools aret to survive, they must adapt.
maria_jordano (11:45:46): but.... do your teachers want to spend their time in things like this?
elderbobcoach (11:45:58): IS this class a private class?
maria_jordano (11:46:01): that's the problem in the institution where I work
susannenyrop (11:46:04): but Bob is right, school could have cell phones and use them as cheap handheld palm devices for creativity and communication purposes ( in the ideal world).
dygonza (11:46:06): students love to be able to attend sessions from home
bdieu2001 (11:46:06): you are lucky
jchaupart (11:46:14): but it's not a problem of schools; the problem is with infrastructure of some regions
bdieu2001 (11:46:21): exactly
dygonza (11:46:33): he he
mikecogh (11:46:34):
maria_jordano (11:46:42): I think the problem is more from the part of the teachers....
teca2002pt (11:46:42): good point renata
bdieu2001 (11:46:42): but where do you draw the line between your privacy and school hours?
maria_jordano (11:46:48): sometimes...
teca2002pt (11:46:55): i agree, bee
elderbobcoach (11:46:58): I foresee a time when the lines of countries are blurred by the technology.
susannenyrop (11:47:08): Michael's final question:
elderbobcoach (11:47:25): Yes, Mellersh.
bdieu2001 (11:47:26): sure
antoniamelvin142 (11:47:29): Yes, as a collaborative tool
evawilden (11:47:35): definitely
susannenyrop (11:47:38): do you see this kind of environment as ususl for your students to learn English, or not?
darcychristianson (11:47:40): Most definately!
antoniamelvin142 (11:47:43): To share opinions and experiences
grankageva (11:47:45): oooh yeah, wondering if it can feasibly be done with cell phones
