Smile, the Knightsbridge hair salon know for its dealing with the likes of Madness and Toyah, was considered quite revolutionary when it opened in 1969. The reason? Simply because it catered for both sexes. It made a full-page story in one newspaper at the time - men and women sitting side by side having their hair done. Smile was started and is still run by Keith and Leslie, who had previously worked at Leonard's, a prestigious hairdressers in London's West End. "But there were a lot of male pop stars, in particular, looking for somewhere to get their hair done , to create a image or find a way of expressing themselves.
