The tale has Xena and the bard traveling to a town where Gabrielle hopes to find a Solstice gift for her companion. Soon after they arrive, however, the town residents begin exhibiting some very strange behavior while Xena starts to feel an overwhelming need to keep her bard safe. Baermer's portrayal of the Xena/Gab relationship is one of uncompromising love and protectiveness. The story works very well as a mystery with the various clues unraveling slowly and leading to some unexpected developments. A great read! Set during the events in the episode COMEDY OF EROS, this is basically a "what if" tale that looks at what could have happened had Joxer NOT made his way in between a certain warrior and Gabrielle when the bard was hit by one of Cupid's arrow. To help a monarch who once offered her army shelter, Xena agrees to try to intimidate a neighboring kingdom into abandoning any expansionist plans they may have. In order to do so, however, she must first convince the king there that she is still the feared warlord of old - an image which really doesn't allow for a bard as a companion. For Xena the solution seems simple - to go alone. For Gabrielle another solution is MUCH more rational - to go along as Xena's slave. Guess who wins ;-) Exceptionally well-written and edited, this is a romance that explores the attraction to things dark and dangerous. Words that come to mind - hot, sizzling, burning! The technique works really well enhancing the characterizations set forth in the first tale and revealing to an even greater degree the love beneath the passion. The same words come to mind as in the first story by the way - HOT, SIZZLING, BURNING - so this one gets the DO NOT READ AT WORK warning as well as a reminder to read Bat's disclaimers (they're too funny to miss anyway). ANOTHER TIME, ANOTHER SOLSTICE EVE Already responsible for two of my favorite Solstice stories ever, SOLSTIVE EVE and SOLSTICE MORNING, Beowolf brings us an absolutely BEAUTIFUL new offering set exactly one year after those two earlier stories. This time Solstice finds the warrior and bard in a very different place under very different circumstances with Xena feeling horribly guilty at the life she is giving Gabrielle. The little bard, however, has different thoughts on the matter, knowing full well from where her happiness truly comes. This story is very much based on the sense of love and family and hope the Solstice season celebrates. It is reaffirming and deeply poignant. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! In this story Xena saves the one-time farmer and soon finds herself in a living Tartarus - traveling with BOTH Gabrielle and the bard's husband - desperately trying to keep her feelings for the young woman hidden while searching for a way to separate their lives forever. Gabrielle soon recognizes in her own heart the feelings reflected back at her from pale blue eyes only now vows to another stand in the way, vows which may keep her from grasping the happiness that has been within her reach all along. Delighting in all the activities, Gabrielle can't quite believe her stoic warrior seems to be enjoying herself too. What the storyteller does not know is that Xena has made careful plans to make sure everything is perfect for Gabrielle because for once she wants to show the bard just what she means to her. Once again B.L. combines drama, suspense and humor into a story that is nicely written and thoroughly entertaining. It is a move that will rock Xena to the very core - forcing her to reevaluate her feelings and come to terms with a truth she's kept buried deep within her heart. They're all people who died at the hands of one Warrior Princess and it's her blood that they want now. Even after finding Charon, it proves to be difficult to keep him out of trouble, especially in places where dancing girls and gambling may be found. THOUGHTS In an interesting stylistic choice that works very well, Blue has broken up this new story into three parts with the first told from Xena's perspective, the second from Gabrielle's, and the third told in third person. We are made privy to the thoughts of these two women even before they find the courage to admit these to one another. Well-written and quite passionate. It begins with a bet between the goddess of love and her winged son. Cupid isn't as certain and to prove it he decides to show his mother a very different type of love from the one they evoke with their magic - a love that is true and complete and so strong that it will inspire generations to come. Meanwhile, a certain Warrior Princess and her bard come upon an old man struggling with a broken cart. Concerned that he would be easy prey for thieves, they invite him to travel with them for a bit. A self-described chronicler of human nature, Valentius becomes fast friends with the young bard who soon confides in him her feelings for the warrior, even showing the old man a simple little gift she hopes will reveal the love in her heart. Valentius will be with them again in a much darker time when moved by the love between these two soulmates he will vow to make sure a love like that is never forgotten. This one will tug at those heart strings so make sure to have the kleenex box well within reach folks. KEEPING FAITH A very satisfying read that is light-hearted and emotional, funny and poignant all at once. Set after the events in the episode ONE AGAINST AN ARMY it follows Xena and Gabrielle as they proceed on their journey away from the battle at Tripolis on their way to buy the convalescent bard her boots. Glad to have survived all they've endured recently and to still be together, the two revel in each others company - making no secret of their love and passion even as they trust one another again with their fears, their regrets and even their anger. Brit Bard gives us here two really excellent characterizations that feel very real, very human in a story that is exclusively about the relationship and the determined faith these two women have in one another.
