From their inception in 1959 till the
merger with the NFL in 1970,
The Buffalo Bills were members of the American Football League or AFL. The charter members of the
AFL were the Boston Patriots,
Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, Houston Oilers, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles
(later San Diego) Chargers, New York Titans (later named the Jets), and
Oakland Raiders. The AFL started out slowly and was considered a joke by the
established National Football League,or NFL. It's owners were even called "The Foolish
Club." As time wore on and the AFL stayed afloat, it became more and more of a
threat to the NFL. The AFL held it's college draft months before the NFL and
raided several promising players from the NFL. It wasn't long before the AFL
would be on par with the NFL. The Bills were an AFL powerhouse in the mid
60's. Winning back-to-back AFL titles in 1964, 1965 and coming just one victory away
from appearing in Super Bowl I in 1966. It is from those teams naturally, that most
of my "AFL era" Hall of Fame players were chosen.
