These Beall High School Environmental Science students attended the North Branch of the Potomac River Symposium at Frostburg State University on 25 October 1999. They learned about the coal mining history of Western Maryland, environmental problems caused by that mining, and solutions that are being put in place.

A nice luncheon was enjoyed and the students were impressed with how major of an influence coal mining has had on the Western Maryland area. They were surprised by the number of persons involved in the water quality of the Potomac River and the amount of money being spent on improving the water quality.
