Exploring the Majestic Doctrines Of The Faith

VOLUME 2

Volume 2
Lesson 2

BIBLIOLOGY....THE MAJESTIC DOCTRINE OF THE SCRIPTURES

TOPIC..."INSPIRATION OF THE SCRIPTURES"

I. DEFINING INSPIRATION

1) What inspiration is...

(a) Inspiration is the act of the Holy Spirit revealing to human writers in both the Old Testament and New Testament...the accurate message God wanted them to know.

(b) Revelation dealt with the content of God's disclosing Himself to man, whereas Inspiration deals with the accurate recording of that revelation!

2) What inspiration IS NOT...

It is NOT:
(a) Product of man's brilliant mind

(b) Product of man's thoughts as coupled with God's concepts

(c) Product of man's feelings

(d) Product of man simply acting in some kind of mechanical dictation

II. DETAILS OF INSPIRATION

1) Sometimes it is called "Verbal-Plenary Inspiration"

A) Concerning the "verbal" part of inspiration

* God directed and controlled the very words He wanted written down, using the life, vocabulary, personality, and emotions of the writer. - 2 Timothy 3:16

(1) In 2 Timothy 3:16, the word "inspiration" is from the Greek word "Theoneustos" which means God breathed

(2) In other words, the Scriptures are that which comes out of God's mouth, namely His BREATHED words.

(3) And, so, the writers of Scripture didn't write their words, but rather the God breathed words that God guided them to write.

* God the Holy Spirit is behind the Inspiration - 2 Peter 1:21

* God and Scripture are the same as concerning Truth..(In other words, when Scripture speaks.....God speaks, and when God speaks....Scripture speaks). Compare Galatians 3:8 with what God said back in Genesis 12 and Genesis 22.

B) Concerning the "plenary" part of inspiration

* The accuracy of the "Verbal" part of inspiration extends to all and every part of the Bible..2 Timothy 3:16.."All Scripture.."

2) Stern Warnings are given as not to tamper withn God's Inspired Scriptures - Deuteronomy 4:1, 2; Proverbs 30:5,6; Revelation 22:18, 19

3) Sure observations result due to inspiration

* The Bible is Infallible Truth - Because God is Truth and it came from Him.

* The Bible is Inerrant (without mistakes)

(1) In the original manuscripts there were no errors.

(2) Down through the generations, there may be some minor variations in the manuscripts, but nothing that hinders ANY Truth of Scripture because God sees to it that He preserves His Truth for us!

* The Bible is Complete and Sufficient

(1) It is complete and sufficient to bring a sinner to salvation - 2 Timothy 3:15

(2) It is complete and sufficient to bring the believer into maturity in Christ - 2 Timothy 3:16, 17

* The Bible is Authoritative - When it speaks we better listen and obey, because God is speaking and He has all authority in heaven and in earth - Isaiah 1:2a

* The Bible is Effective - Isaiah 55:11; Hebrews 4:12
