Introduction
(Sound Doctrine)
1) "Sound" = to be in good health; to be healthy; uncorrupt; true
2) "Doctrine" = teaching or instruction
3) Thus, preaching sound doctrine is preaching the uncorrupt, healthy, true words of God.
4) Doctrine is so important that the Holy Spirit inspired many passages dealing with it.
......Romans 6:17; I Timothy 4:6; I Timothy 4:13; I Timothy 4:16; I Timothy 5:16; 2 Timothy 4:2
II. DOCTRINE - ITS PURPOSE
To Deal With:
1) Fake unity
a) John 17:21 -Some people read this and say they don't worry about doctrine, but they just strive for unity. When you strive for unity, not based on sound teaching of the Word of God, you end up with a superficial or 'fake' unity.
b) John 17:17 - The context of verse 21 lets us know as we look back at verse 17 that this unity is based on the truth of the Word.
2) False teachers
a) Jesus warned about them - Matthew 7:15-20; 7:21-23
b) Peter warned about them - 2 Peter 2: 1, 2
c) John warned about them - I John 4: 1-3; 2 John 1: 7 - 10
d) Jude warned about them - Jude 1:4
e) Paul warned about them - Ephesians 4:11
3) Fickled people - 2 Timothy 4:1 - 4
4) Furtherance of our spiritual growth - 2 Timothy 3:16, 17
III. DOCTRINE - ITS SYNONYMS
1) When we are teaching and preaching sound doctrine, we are are teaching and preaching a number of similiar terms that all are related to each other.
2) There are different terms in which doctrine would be a part.
