Who and Why
Have you ever wondered who they are and why they do it?  Why they would spend so much time and energy on a project that doesn't pay?  I'm talking about the volunteers, the people that live in your community.  And what are these super citizens volunteering for?  The Billings Community Fair, of course. The yearly event that takes place every year at the same time, same place.  The event that takes care of all my summer spare time.  It's a time when the whole town visit's the park to watch their favorite event or just to spend time with family and friends.

This is my second year to serve as a fair board member.  This board consists of twelve members of the community, ranging from age 20 to 75.  There are men, women, Mothers, Fathers, Grandmas, Grandpas, factory workers, and college students.  When I joined the ranks of this project some members I knew.  Some were even friends.  Some I didn't know.  I can only guess at the reasons why the other eleven have elected to take on this task.

I guess the logical answer to the question why would be -- for the good of the community.  Okay, that's one reason.  Because they have a lot of spare time.  Well, that's two reasons.  All I really know is why I do this.  Every future fair that I can make better helps make up for the ones I took for granted years before.  I never really cared enough to wonder who does all the work, or who puts up all the money.  It was just an event that some how took place every year.  As I've gotten older I have realized it's important to make a difference.  If my helping with this fair makes a difference in someone's life then great.  But I really do it for the kids.  They are really what it's all about.  If we spend a little more time with them as children, they have to be better adults.  Right?

As the big weekend grows closer and you begin to make plans to attend, you might think about all the volunteers, sponsors, and supporters of the Billings Community Fair.  Who are they?  Why do they do this?  I'm sure if you ask them, they will tell you.  I love talking about the fair.  I'm sure they will too.  Your life will be richer for your efforts, I know mine is.

See you at the fair!!
