TRAINING YOUR PARAKEET TO TALK: Teach words before whistles or other sounds. Start with a simple phrase & repeat as often as possible, but at least three, 5 minute  sessions, a day. Use the correct tone of voice as birds will mimic sounds AS they hear them. Young birds forget easily. Work on the training, daily. Be patient & persistant. Some learn    faster than others, but all parakeets have the capability, to learn to talk.
A MEMORIAL TO "FLAVOR": A very gifted bird, & a fast learner, with a large vocabulary. He could laugh, cough, whistle, hic-up, cry, meow & say 27 different phrases like: "Where's Tony? What's ya doin'? Watchin' T.V.?  Pretty baby bird. I taught I taw a puddy tat! hic-up, hic-up. I did, I did. Ha, ha, ha, ha. I'm a hot papa & a cool cat!  What's new Buckwheat? Aw, sit on it, you dumb bird. Nyka, you silly dog! Kiss my grits!" Sometimes he'd get messed up & say "Patty, you silly dog". Patty bred him & he lived 10 years.
THE MIRROR MYTH:  Parakeets are "colony" birds & if kept alone, will need a mirror, for the times you aren't with him. "Flavor" (above) always had a mirror     & was also very attached to us. A lonely bird is not going to be a happy or a healthy bird.
A TRIBUTE TO "PRETTY BOY":  We didn't breed or train this one. He was given to Patty right after "Flavor"  died, by Jenny, a friend, who could no longer keep him. "Pretty Boy" always had a mirror & also talked, tho not to the extent that "Flavor" did. He also barked like a dog & several of our keets in the birdroom, picked it up from him. He was also a VERY curious bird!
Hi, I'm "Jughead". I'm a Double Tufted, Austrailian Pied, Skyblue, Budgie Parakeet. You don't see many  birds with a head like mine. I'm a cool looking bird. I'm also very tame & I get jealous when my mama talks to the other birds. I hang on the side of my cage, waiting for MY attention. When Mom opens my door, I'll get on her hand & kiss her ALL OVER her face!
This is another example of a Tufted Budgie we had a couple of years ago. He was a Yellow Faced,              Greywing, Skyblue.
On the left is an Australian Pied, cinnamon, green. On the right is an English, Lacewing.
These babies in the swing are green recessive Pieds, usually called Harlequins.
Hi, I'm "Fiesty". I like to lay on my back, in my mommy's hand...I'm a real mess...I'm very tame, but sometimes I bite her. She says I'll outgrow it, in time. I'm an Australian Pied, green.
These are some of the tamer ones...an American Fallow, yellow & an Australian Pied, skyblue, sitting outside of their cage. Looks like the others want out, too!
A WORD OF CAUTION:  Non-stick cookware, when over-heated, releases fumes which are toxic to birds! And ANY type of spray may be harmful or toxic!! If you use              newspapers on the bottom of the cage, make SURE they are only black & white. Any color on the pages is poisonous to birds & other animals that chew!!!  And if you let your bird out, please take precautions to insure it's safety!
