Jet's Love: The One that Got Away. because time never stands still..................................... |
One of my favorite episodes of Cowboy Bebop is Session 10: Ganymeade Ellegy, where Jet goes home to Ganymeade to confront Alisa, the woman he loved, to ask her why she left him, 8 years after the fact. Not only is it a great story in terms of what we learn about Jet and other characters, but it's also great in how true to life it is; a lot of couples break up for the very reason Alisa leaves Jet. For a refreshing change, I actually WON'T give away the entire plot to this session, since it's kind of auxiliary to the main story of Jet and Alisa. First of all, what do we know about Jet? That he's dependable. Level headed. Old-fashioned, maybe even male-chauvenistic. However, as we learn in this session, this all adds up to the fact that Jet is always, ALWAYS RIGHT. For Alisa, whose charm lies in her beauty and kindness rather than good judgement calls, this had become infuriating; Not only did Jet make all the decisions, but she couldn't accuse him of making poor decisions since he always made the right choice. In a nutshell, her job was to be adorable and cook dinner. Of course Jet adored her, but what kind of life is that for an independent woman in the year 2064? This brings a whole new dimension to Jet's character: his greatest stregnth, being sensible, is also his greatest detriment: He wants to protect the people he loves from bad decisions, so much so that he dosen't give them room to breathe and drives them away. This episode was the turning point that made me decide that Jet was one of the most sympathetic, well-written characters in anime, not only due to his character but by the fantastic job done by Jet's English voice actor in this episode. Whether the English or Japanese cast of Bebop does a better job is a whole other story, but I have to say that in the case of Jet my mind is made up. While in previous episodes Jet had sounded gruff and kept his feelings close to the vest, in his brief conversations with Alisa (" I didn't come here to blame you, I just wanted to know why........."), you can practically hear the fasade of stability drop away, and just how lonely he's really been since she left. Please Jet, don't cry! We still love you, even if you ARE always right......... |

That faithful day, there was nothing there but her pocket watch, and a note that said 'Farewell'. Isn't that kind of cold though? |
