My name is Matthew McFarland. I live in Middleburg Heights, Ohio, which is outside of Cleveland. I'm a freelancer for White Wolf Game Studios, a full-time dad, and have been a Storyteller all my life. I'm not sure what else might qualify as answering the "who I am" question. I define myself as a husband and father, as a Storyteller, and as just plain ol' Matt. Since the RPG essays section deals with Storytelling in detail, I suppose we'll do the husband and father thing here. My wife's name is Heather, and here's a picture of us on our wedding day, along with some other, unrelated (yet still interesting) pictures. She works as a pediatric physical therapist, which is what she's always wanted to do (and yes, I'm very proud of her. Go Heather!). Heather gave birth to our daughter, Teagan Autumn McFarland, on October 7, 2004. You can find pictures of our little girl on Heather's site (see the Links page). As just plain ol' Matt, I'm a fiction writer as well as a role-playing game writer. My writing style has changed a great deal over the past few years. If you'd like, you're welcome to read some short stories I've written - realistic ficiton, mostly. Click here for those. I have a degree in English and Theater from the University of Toledo, which means I'm almost, but not quite, completely unmarketable (although I spent three years developing RPGs for a living, and I'm looking at going to grad school in Fall of 2005). It also means that I have a good sense of how a story needs to get put together, and what you need to do to dramatize it. The list of books that I've worked on is actually getting longer, which, in a word, rocks. Said list is here. |
Who is...BlackHat Matt? |
As any longtime gamer will tell you, a gaming session often includes some silly, clever, moving and downright funny lines, both in and out of character. To my lasting regret, I did not start keeping track of gaming quotes until I moved to Atlanta, but now that I have, you can bet I'll keep the page updated just in case anybody else finds that sort of thing funny. At present I've got three quotes pages: Ohio (quotes from chronicles run in Ohio), Georgia (same, but for the Peachtree State) and Cons (quotes from convention games). You can also access these quotes from their appropriate pictures, if such exist. Enjoy! |
