A Century's Worth: UP Through Years of Education, Struggle and Making History |
Welcome to InkwellWhat is Inkwell? In the olden times before ball point pens and the convenience of computers, people needed plumes(feathers) and ink to write out everything from public documents to personal letters. In that time, though it came in various sizes and forms as time went on, they called what stored the ink "inkwell". Another variation on the meaning is taken when you break off the phrase into "ink" and "well" to equal "ink well". In modern pop culture it taken to be synonymous to tattoos - and printing. In slang "ink[s] well" means that the ink was readily absorbed by the skin - or paper - leaving a clear mark. That's what this news website aims to do - leave its mark. Inkwell is an experiment of sorts, a project intended for the webauthor's Online Journalism(J117) class, that aims to cater to news and issues in media, on campus and in the country. This website made using html handcoding on notepad. Some helpful links include Dave Ragett's introduction and Werbach's Barebones guide to html. The webauthorIs a junior journalism major at the university whose interests include photojournalism, literature and women's issues. |
The ZTE AlphabetThe National Broadband Network project scandal rocked our shores shortly after President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo unveiled an ambitious State of the Nation Address (SONA) last July. The SONA outlined priority projects in infrastructure in the form of roads, airports and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) the now defunct CyberEducation Project and the NBN project. What was originally a project envisioned to improve communications between government institutions and local communities through broadband technologies has instead stirred up discord and unearthed corruption in the government. |

Bytes and BitsNew Media signals the beginning of an electronic age which, if you know your science fiction, is just one more step towards that city of tomorrow. The city will be peopled by media consumers whose attitudes may not differ much from today’s current generation who are growing up using the television and to a lesser extent the internet, and not the radio or newspaper, as their primary source of news. It will be peopled by city people – whose time is limited and schedules are fixed around a great centralized time device. And they will expect media to keep up. |

ACLE: ExorcismHorror stories are only popular on Halloween, or on holidays, most of the time they’re only of interest to the fans of the genre. People, after all, are in it for the scare. They revel at the thought of supernatural beings – ghosts, demons and elementals. Some things though, others caution, are best not tempted by fate or the faint of heart. Like exorcism. |
