MARIPOL
bio by : Nicky London
French born designer Maripol arrived in New York in 1976 and became art director for Fiorucci, the fashion store on 59th street. At the time Fiorucci was a style locomotive for many artists and musicians including Keith Haring & Kenny Scharf who had their first exhibitions there. As well as being a talented jewelry designer and stylist Maripol also assisted Jean Paul Goude. She helped create styles for such artists as Madonna, Grace Jones & Blondie. Her Polaroids and signature jewelry have become style icons for an era of fashion with resurgence from today’s youth and designers. People today are still talking about thed early looks from Madonna’s Lucky Star video that Maripol created as well as the Like A Virgin wedding dress, which was used both in the video and at the MTV music awards. The dress fetched a hefty sum at the Christy’s auction, which was donated to charity a few years back. Today Maripol still resides in New York with her son Lino. She is currently a producer and documentary film maker for such films as the award winning “Downtown 81”.
