Luke chapter 16: 1-13 TA Baisden In these verses it speaks about a steward who cheats his employer. Some one told the employer about what the steward had been doing and his lost his postion or in other words his boss fired him. Why? well he was found to be a disloyal and unfaithful servant. This really shook up the steward, he didn't know what to do. He didn't want to have anything to do with hard work for he felt that was beneath him. He didn't want to lose his life style or the friends he had. So he plotted and planned what he could to to kept these thing that he valued above all else. Well first of all these so called "friends" he had must have been what is called "fair weather friends". Friends who base friendship on material goods or your station in life, there for the goods times only. These people didn't sound much better then he did, did they. So he decided to cheap his employer a second time, this he did even after he had lost his positon with him. He went to people that owed his fromer employer and cut a big chunk of what they owed him off of their bills (told you his friends were any better then him for they agree to his under handedness). In v. 8 the employer found out a second time what he had done and he gave him credit in a way for being so cunning and resourceful. Not that he approved of him cheating him of course but for the means that he would go to to kept what he thought was important to him. Many even today does what this steward was shown to do. That some will go to any means or lenght to cheap someone to get what they want, no matter who they have to hurt to get it. These things mention above and others are what the bible calls the, lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and pride of life, these are where all sins began from. (I John 2:16-17, Gal. 5:16, Jam. 1:14-15, II Peter 1:4, I Cor. 10:6) Christ is telling that there is only one "GOD" to worship on earth and in heaven and nonthing else no matter what it is, including mammon, which is earthly wealth. In other words anythings that people are more concerned with in this life is truly what they worship. Whether it be money, family, jobs, positions in life, homes, looks, clothes, cars, pagan religious gods or even friends. No one can serve two gods or masters. You are either God's or the devil's, there is no in between for you to chose from. |
