Originally from Pace, Mississippi, Laverne "Lady Blue" Johnson had been on the Mpls/St Paul blues scene since the 1970's, when she first settled in the area, following her long stint with Ike & Tina Turner as an Ike-ette......
Her musical roots went back to her childhood in the South, where she first sang gospel songs back in the late 1950's. After settling in Minnesota, Lady Blue appeared regularly with Sonny "Cat Daddy" Rodgers, Sammy Lawhorn, Mojo Buford, Dave "Cool Breeze" Brown, Milwaukee Slim, and a host of others. Following Sonny's death in 1990, Sonny's band, the Baby Boys joined forces with Lady Blue for several years, touring the midwest, and appearing regularly at Biscuits & Blues in Minneapolis.
Shady Lady was released in 1994 and received rave reviews at the time. It featured ten original songs (one of which carried the unfortunate title, Wind Beneath My Wings - decidedly NOT in any way related to the pop tune of the same name!!).
This CD is now out of print. LaVerne passed away September 28, 1999, following a prolonged illness. She will be sorely missed. |
