AUSTRALIA .. SNAKES

Snakes are part of life if one lives on a farm or in the bush. Most are harmless if left alone, but there are many very very dangerous and deadly varieties.

BROWN SNAKE captures and engulfs its prey on the forest floor. Its a fawn-footed native rat, in North Queensland

DEATH ADDER, one of the most dangerous snakes in the world. It is found all over Australia except the central desert and is unlike, in appearance, in other Australian snake.

CARPET PYTHON is found throughout Australia, living in all sorts of conditions from tropical rainforests of eastern Australia to the arid desert of the centre. Its size is from 2m to 4 m (6 feet to 12 feet).

We have a carpet snake living in our large shed - up high in the rafters where we leave him/her alone - they eat rats, birds and dont worry humans unless provoked. We find the shedded skin each year.

COMMON TREE SNAKE is a slender agile snake that spends most of its time in trees, but also forages on the ground for frogs, birds and other reptiles. Found in coastal areas of the east and north of Australia.

TIGER SNAKES can vary in colour. This one is the Eastern or Mainland species of the venomous snake and is found in south-eastern Australia.
On our farm in south-eastern Queensland, we have varieties of Tiger Snakes, in our bush and also around our garden area.

BLACK-HEADED PYTHON kills its prey of mammals and birds by constriction. found in the northern half of Australia and is non-venomous.

The BROAD-HEADED SNAKE here is poised to strike. He feeds on geckos and skinks. The flicking tongue acts as the nose by registering particles of scent.

The Olive Python lives western and north-western parts of Australia

The Diamond Python has a skin decorated with many small motifs.
These snakes like to curl up in shed rafters during winter just under a sun-heated roof. They eat birds and mice and are active at night.

A bite from a Yellow-faced Whipsnake will cause pain but not potentially lethal to humans.
